Researchers have long been interested in measuring musical skills objectively, but the task proved difficult. A common approach for determining musical competence is to rely on musicianship status. However, this approach fails to identify musically untrained individuals with musical skills, as well as gradations among those with extensive musical training.

To counteract this limitation, we developed the Profile of Music Perception Skills (PROMS; Law & Zentner, 2012). The PROMS is a novel musical test battery that measures perceptual musical skills objectively across 9 different
modalities.
