Research Coffee Club

Coffee, cake, and research. Join us for the Research Coffee Club - a biweekly meeting of members of the Department of Psychology, in which recent scientific projects are discussed.

About

The Research Coffee Club is an informal meeting for everyone who is involved in research. It takes place every two weeks, on Thursdays, from 16:00 to 17:00. The meetings’ aim is to provide an opportunity to discuss scientific topics together, while having a coffee break. Volunteers can present their data, an interesting article, methodological problems or any other topic they feel it is interesting and important to share. The meetings are held in English, and they are a great opportunity for young scientists to improve their presentation skills, but also for senior scientist that would like to have interesting debates.

Important: All meetings will be organized following COVID-19 norms, and your attendance must be registered here.

Dr. Christina Sagioglou - Benign masochism as a core personality trait?

Multiple lines of research have independently studied the uniquely human ability to find pleasure in suffering, such as enjoying fear-inducing horror movies, sadness-inducing art, spicy food, or physical pain. I think (and have preliminary data to support this view) that all of these preferences are (in part) expressions of benign masochism—a tendency to enjoy aversive emotional experiences. Yet, a lot of characteristics of benign masochism are still unclear, for example, which aversive preferences are masochistic and which are not, how the construct relates to sexual masochism, or whether negative experiences always require a safe context to be enjoyed. Within this talk, I’ll argue for the idea that benign masochism is a core personality trait and would like to hear your thoughts on the many open questions regarding whether and what benign masochism actually is.
