What is at issue:

No concept is more controversial in the history of ontology, and also in the contemporary discussion, than 'substance'. Whether a given ontology includes substances or rejects them — this basically decides not only what is the framework of categories accepted in the ontology, but also what is the conception of metaphysics it presupposes. For many approaches to metaphysics, substances are indispensable, especially, of course, for Aristotelian-Thomistic approaches.

In our workshop, we will discuss recent attempts to refute substance ontology, as well as strategies to re-establish it with new ontological/formal tools. We will pay special attention to the fact that 'substance' is a central topic in philosophy. The acceptance or rejection of substances has farreaching consequences for the philosophy of mind (the key issue here is substance dualism) and other philosophical disciplines, for example, the philosophy of science and the philosophy of nature.
