To gain knowledge and understanding of the international scientific publishing field.

To practice strategies and techniques for writing high quality scientific articles for publication in English.

Course content:               

In this course the following topics are covered:

  • Publication procedures in leading scientific journals
  • Expectations of publishers and peer reviewers
  • Analysis of abstracts in leading journals
  • Strategies for writing abstracts
  • How to write an introduction (analysis and writing)
  • Strategies for giving professional peer feedback
  • Individual coaching: Further work on the text written on Day 1; tips and tricks for successful publications; individualised feedback on structural, style and language issues for scientific writing in English.


  1. Bring your laptop with you if you prefer to type than write by hand.
  2. Bring one influential/important published paper from a leading journal in your field (not authored by yourself; not Nature or Science).
  3. Mentally prepare (or imagine) a journal article you plan to write. Before the seminar, write a short abstract for your paper; bring it with you. You will begin to write the paper during the seminar.
