Research Profile
The Unit for Peace and Conflict Studies is dedicated to furthering multi- and interdisciplinary international research projects on curriculum development, capacity building, peace and reconciliation, transitional justice etc. Faculty engages in research activities that are undertaken both within the disciplinary framework of the Unit for Peace and Conflict Studies as well as transdisciplinary within the Research Center for Peace and Conflict (InnPeace). Currently, the Unit promotes research and publication in this field and currently cooperates for this end with the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena/Germany in the Academic Alliance for Reconciliation in the Middle East and North Africa AARMENA and its Erasmus+ Program Capacity Building for Higher Education in the same area. Further, it holds an Erasmus+ Program with Jimma University in Ethiopia.
Former Projects
UNDP - Iraq
In this UNDP-funded project the UNESCO Chair for Peace Studies facilitates the development of Peace Studies at nine Iraqi Universities in the framework of national reconciliation in post-ISIS Iraq.
APPEAR - Ethiopia
This Austrian Development Cooperation funded project facilitates an academic partnership between Innsbruck and Haramaya University, to strengthen capacities for Peace and Development Studies in Ethiopia.
PESTUGE - Georgia
This project contributes to the enhancement of teaching as well as training activities in Peace Studies at graduate level for students in Tbilisi, Georgia and regional universities in conflict-affected areas.

In this ground-breaking new volume, the social function of 'peace' is explored through the prism of cultural pluralism.
Prominent scholars and thinkers from more than 30 different cultures reflect on the notion of peace, and the diversity of their perspectives highlights the different cultural perceptions surrounding the meaning and scope of peace. What we understand as 'peace' is dependent on the context within which it is used. Some cultures have a multitude of notions that translate into English simply as peace, whereas an equivalent to peace in the European sense does not even exist in others. This volume shows that the concept of world peace can only be realised as a plural of 'many peaces'; an understanding of peace cannot be reached without the explicit acceptance of the many different notions of peace.
