Developing Peace Studies in Times of Crisis
As Ethiopia is going through the most difficult internal conflicts in years, scholars from Ethiopia and Austria collaboratively work towards building institutional capaci... [more]
Ethiopia is facing the effects of climate change, in the midst of one of its worst droughts ever, and is simultaneously developing faster than almost any other African nation. Growth and poverty are resulting in displacement, potential erasure of indigenous cultures and languages, and ownership of land and nature is being disputed. So, innovative, sustainable, and culturally specific approaches to peace and development are urgent. HU has recognized this need and wants to develop its capacities to be a pioneer in community-based and indigenously developed approaches to peacebuilding. UIBK has developed a rigorous and holistic approach to peace education that teaches its students to draw from their cultural context as a great source of knowledge for alternatives to conflict and violence. Thus, through biannual staff exchanges, guest lectures, skills-based facilitation and conflict analysis workshops for interdisciplinary staff and students, this partnership aims to bolster the nascent MA and PhD programs in peace building at HU. UIBK will introduce cutting edge theory, curriculum, didactics and applied approaches to peace and conflict work which strengthens HU‘s capacity to generate Ethiopian thinkers, teachers, and practitioners in the field of peace, as well as produce research that is culturally and epistemologically relevant to the Ethiopian context. In addition, the hands-on trainings given by UIBK staff in facilitation skills and approaches, and systemic conflict analysis will further contribute to the development of HU as an integrative academic space promoting engaged learning, participatory research, and innovative action. Furthermore, this partnership will support HU staff in envisioning a broader peace centre at HU that educates and facilitates peace from and for the Ethiopian context, in dialogue with the world.
