This seminar will focus on understanding peace and conflict based on Johan Galtung’s theoretical conceptualizations of structural violence, conflict transformation and negative and positive peace. It will explore different forms of peacebuilding and will take empirical case studies from conflict-affected contexts such as Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Syria and Colombia to illustrate the complexities surrounding war economies, peace processes, post-war peacebuilding and reconciliation processes. The course will include lectures and interactive debates and discussions. Students will be assessed by an oral presentation on a case study and a 10-page essay.
