- Open access publishing in Oxford University Press (OUP) journals
Since January 2023, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge with Oxford University Press (OUP). Members of both universities can publish open access in 475 hybrid and gold open access journals of OUP free of charge.

ATTENTION! The article contingent is maxed out until the end of September! From 01.10.2022 you can publish open access free of charge again. Until then, there is the option of publishing the article closed access or covering the costs yourself.
- Open access publishing in Cell Press journals
Since January 2022, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge in the hybrid open access journals of Cell Press. Members of both universities can publish open access in journals free of charge.
- Open access publishing in 8 AIP journals
Since January 2022, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck to publish open access in selected American Institute of Physics (AIP) journals free of charge.
Members of the University of Innsbruck can publish open access in 8 hybrid journals of AIP free of charge and have access to the publisher's licensed content.
- Open access publishing in Brill journals
Since January 2022, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck to publish open access in Brill journals free of charge.
Members of the University of Innsbruck can publish open access in Brill's gold and hybrid journals free of charge and have access to the publisher's licensed content.
- Open access publishing in IEEE journals
From 30 November 2021 until 31 December 2024, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck to publish open access in IEEE journal content free of charge. Members of the University of Innsbruck can publish open access in 158 hybrid journals and in more than 20 IEEE gold open access journals for free and also have access to the entire portfolio of the publisher.
- Open Access publishing in Thieme journals
Since January 2021, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge with Thieme.
Members of both universities can publish open access free of charge in about 70 hybrid journals of Thieme and have also access to the publisher’s scientific journals.
- New offer for open access publishing in Elsevier journals
Since January 2021, a new offer allows members of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge in gold open access journals of Elsevier in addition to hybrid journals.
- Open Access publishing in RSC journals
Since January 2021, members of the University of Innsbruck are again eligible for free open access publishing with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Members of the University of Innsbruck can publish in almost 40 RSC hybrid journals free of charge and have access to over 50 of the publisher's scientific journals.
- New FWF Open Access Policy starting 2021
The FWF’s new open access guidelines will go into effect on 1 January 2021 and be in line with the international Plan S initiative. The new Open Access Policy applies for all FWF research projects that are approved as of 1 January 2021.
- Open Research Europe
The European Commission has launched a scientific publishing service called Open Research Europe. Open Research Europe provides all Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe beneficiaries and their researchers with a venue to publish their results in open access, at no cost, and in full compliance with the open access policies. The formal launch of the platform will take place in early 2021, but submissions are already open. The platform is accepting publications in all fields of science.
- FWF: Funding to Establish or Modernise Scientific/Academic Journals to Comply with Plan S
As of 1 January 2020, the Stand-Alone Publications programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) was updated to fund the establishment or modernisation of scientific/academic journals, with the aim of meeting the minimum requirements for publication formats of Plan S of cOAlition S.

The 2019 International Open Access Week will be held October 21-27, 2019. This year’s theme is “Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge.”

- Springer Nature and the Austrian Academic Library Consortium renew open access contract for another three years
Springer Nature and the Austrian Academic Library Consortium (Kooperation E-Medien Österreich KEMÖ) have renewed their existing open access contract for Springer journals. The transformative agreement enables researchers and students in Austria to publish peer-reviewed research articles open access in more than 1,900 Springer journals without additional fees.

- How does the final version of Plan S affect scholars who receive FWF funding?
Following an open consultation process, the final guidelines for the implementation of Plan S were published at the end of May 2019. Plan S comes into force on 1.1.2021 and means amended Open Access conditions for the publication of scientific articles resulting from FWF projects.

- University of California terminates subscriptions with Elsevier
As a leader in the global movement toward open access to publicly funded research, the University of California is taking a firm stand by deciding not to renew its subscriptions with Elsevier. Despite months of contract negotiations, Elsevier was unwilling to meet UC’s key goal: securing universal open access to UC research while containing the rapidly escalating costs associated with for-profit journals.
- Open Access Publishing with De Gruyter
We offer scientists from the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck the opportunity to publish open access in De Gruyter hybrid journals free of charge. We have agreed an Open Access deal with the publisher De Gruyter, which offers scientists of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck the possibility to publish their research results as corresponding authors open access in hybrid journals of De Gruyter without additional payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs). Special agreement for Gold OA journals: for publications in Gold OA journals by De Gruyter, there is a discount of 15% per article. The agreement also includes online access to all of the publisher's journals and is valid for the year 2019.
- Reduced-fee OA publishing with BioMed Central (BMC)/ SpringerOpen
The University of Innsbruck has a shared support membership with BMC, which offers scientists and students of the University of Innsbruck the opportunity to publish their research results in BMC and SpringerOpen Journals to 50% of the APC. The remaining costs are covered by the university.
- arXiv
arXiv. org is an open-access repository for preprints in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, financial mathematics and biology. The University and Regional Library of Tyrol provides financial support for the operation of arXiv.
- Open access publishing with Wiley
The university and regional library of Tyrol has agreed on an open access deal with the publisher Wiley, which offers all scientists of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck, i.e. as corresponding authors, the opportunity to publish their research results open access in the hybrid journals of Wiley without additional payment for Article Processing Charges (APCs). The agreement also includes online access to all of the publisher's journals and will be effective for the years 2018-20.
