Tour 1:
Trip to Mondsee’s characteristic mountain “Schafberg” by steam cog wheel railway

Logo of the "SchafbergBahn & WolfgangseeSchifffahrt"We will go by bus from Mondsee to St. Gilgen at lake Wolfgangsee and take the ship across the lake to St. Wolfgang. The steepest steam cog wheel railway in Austria has been running from St. Wolfgang to the Schafberg mountain since 1893. In 45 minutes it climbs 1,190 meters of altitude over a stretch of 5.85 km to the summit of the Schafberg. The maximum grade of the route is 26%. Although the steam engines are among the oldest in the world, a trip up the Schafberg with the diesel locomotives is also an unforgettable experience. The Schafberg (1,783 m) is considered one of the most beautiful mountain views in the world-famous Salzkammergut region. On a clear day there is a 360° panoramic view of the glistening Salzkammergut lakes, including lakes Wolfgangsee, Irrsee, Mondsee, Attersee, Fuschlsee and Chiemsee. The majestic mountain landscapes include the famous towering peaks of the Traunstein mountain to the Watzmann mountain and the ever white Dachstein glacier.

During the guided trip you will visit the following famous "Sound of Music" – locations:

Mirabell Gardens1 - Mirabell Gardens (have to be visited by the clients on their own!)

The Mirabell Gardens were laid out in the 18th century. Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged horse, and throughout the gardens singing 'Do-Re-Mi'.


Leopoldskron Castle2 - Leopoldskron Castle

The front side of the castle was used as the Trapp family home, the children were boating on the Leopoldskron Lake and fell into the water. The Venetian room was copied from the castle and used as the ballroom.


Hellbrunn Castle3 - Hellbrunn Castle

This hunting castle was built in the early 17th century by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus. In the gardens the glass pavillion was reconstructed for the pleasure of those fans still returning after 30 years.


Nonnberg Abbey4 - Nonnberg Abbey

Nonnberg Abbey is the oldest convent in the German speaking part of Europe. Maria was a novice there. The baron and Maria were married here in 1927. The scenes for the movie made here include the opening with the nuns going to Mass and Maria coming too late.


5 - St. Gilgen at the Lake Wolfgangsee (short photo stop)

Scenery shown at the beginning of the movie was filmed at Lake Fuschl on the way to St. Gilgen. Like the Mozart family, visitors from all over the world appreciate the beautiful village in the Salzkammergut.+

In Mondsee Cathedral the film wedding between Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Baron took place.
