Examples of EUREGIO Mobility Fund Projects

The reports give a brief description of the experiences and the activities that took place within the EUREGIO Mobility Fund Projects.

The following Euregio Mobiliy Fund projects have been carried out by students and professors of the three Euregio universities (Trento, Bolzano/Bozen and Innsbruck) and financed by the European Region Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino (EVTZ Europaregion Tirol-Südtirol-Trentino).  

  

Architecture and design

Design as Group Work

The project aimed at students developing the practical skills of working in interdisciplinary teams on design projects, a focus that is often missing from the traditional, classroom-based approach to university education, but is highly sought after by the industry among university graduates.

The educational activities of the project were carried out as a winter school, which was a single three-day event hosted in Trento, from the 4th to 6th of December, 2017. The winter school allowed for more in-depth presentation and discussion of design perspectives by invited speakers, more time for the students to interact and develop their design projects, and more time for the school tutors to mentor students individually or in groups.

The school theme was “Education as a Common Good”, which presumed the development of tools, methods or ecosystems for facilitating access to education and knowledge by communities sharing a set of education-related resources, with no involvement of commercial or governmental bodies. Students were split in teams and worked on a design project of their choice, but relevant to the school theme. Students presented their projects at the end of the school and received additional final feedback. At the end, we asked the students to provide an anonymous feedback about the school. The students were generally satisfied with the school, particularly mentioning their appreciation for the experience of working in teams, with team members having diverse educational backgrounds and perspectives on design problems.

INFRAstructures FUTURES. Scenarios and strategies for the development of infrastrucure systems towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient landscape

INFRAFUTURES offered an interdisciplinary platform to debate, confront, share and produce knowledge on the territorial, architectural, environmental and economical dimension of infrastructures and their futures and the possible application/added values in the EUREGIO. Students, professors, and practitioners have addressed topics related to landscape, ecology, sustainability, innovation, technology, climate change, and resilience as collaborators for defining the future meaning of infrastructures at the various scales. 

Two major activities of interaction between students, professors, and practitioners have been proposed. First, joint lectures and seminars organized both in Trento and in Innsbruck from April to September 2018 that collected national and international professors and scholars. Second, a numbers of field trips to visit renewed exhibition on related topics and to internationally present the results of the students’ projects experimentation. 

The project addressed, through different scales and methodologies, the renewed relationship between infrastructures and landscapes, urban development and climate change, productive habitat and environmental systems, to offer advanced knowledge, new visions and strategies to rethink urban infrastructures for more resilient and adaptable cities.

On several occasions the Euregio cooperation offered the chance to share specific research expertise and teaching experience among the universities involved in order to keep active the on-going process that foresees the development of a common and sharable background in the fields of urban development, landscape valorisation, new technologies and the implementation of infrastructure in the common territory.

Computer science and digital forensics

Do you trust what you see? The Euregio Challenge on Multimedia Security and Forensics

The project originates from the common research interests of the University of Trento (UNITN) and the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) in the area of information security with applications to multimedia signals. The main goal of the project has been to complement the teaching offered at both institutions with first-hand training on selected topics in multimedia security and to engage students in an innovative learning approaches.
We organized mutual guest lectures on topics such as steganography and steganalysis (UNITN) and detecting computer-generated images (UIBK) and a competition, Image Forensics Challenge, which lasted 4 months (65 students involved). During the competition students have received an initial dataset of forged images and grouped in competing teams. They have been asked to develop their own forgery detection algorithm. Each team has worked toward the design of an automatic detector, whose performance has been compared on a set of test images, thus producing a final ranking.

A final event took place in Innsbruck (22-23/03/2018). Students had the chance to present their work in front of their colleagues and the best performing teams have been awarded.

Moreover, we created a website, http://euregiommsec.info/2017-edition/, which contains information on the organized activities and a summary of the final event. During the final event we have also collected feedback from the students through a structured survey composed of closed and open-ended questions. The results were very positive. 

 

Lean Startup Lab

The project builds from the experience of two previous academic years, where the University of Trento (UNITN), the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano (UNIBZ) and the University of Innsbruck (UIBK), which joined the project last year, teamed up to exploit the synergies in their project-based graduate courses on start-up creation. The project recognizes that UNITN, UNIBZ and UIBK offer separate project-based graduate courses (UNIBZ: Lean Startup; UNITN: Startup Lab, UIBK: Entrepreneurship) focusing on similar topics related to how creative ideas can be turned into start-up. These courses are successful (number of attending students and quality of the learning experience can be considered as a proof) and have complementary views on the topics of “I&E” applied to new venture creation. The project aimed to exploit the synergies between the three courses. The objectives were to promote mobility between the students, the lecturers, and the three universities.

 The mail goals of the joint initiative have been represented by the following:

  • To support the creation of an inter-campus community of start-uppers;
  • To increase the number of graduate students (including PhD) who include entrepreneurship education in their study plan;
  • To deal with the problem of critical mass that affects small and local initiatives;
  • To organize joint events (e.g. Startup Weekend).

The collaboration was very well perceived and it helped spreading the awareness of the existence of a larger community of students at work on the same kind of education and to facilitate collaboration and best practice exchanges between faculties from different universities.


Graphic science and visual communication

Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage. Elaboration on Images and Drawings through Open Source Software

The project has two main outcomes. The first one involved an intensive workshop during which students learned to use free and open source 2D-3D software, in order to process digital images that can be useful to the knowledge and enhancement of cultural heritage, as well as some techniques for its communication. The Library of the Major Priest Seminary was the study case chosen for the workshop: photomodelling, short films with drone shots, virtual visits and photomontages have been some of the ways of manipulating the image for the animation and realistic visualization of a cultural heritage not easily accessible to date.

The workshop had the goal of describing and applying the most qualified and common methods in the field of graphic sciences, digital representation and visual communication, as well as in the media, in order to enable participants to acquire basic knowledge for the design and implementation of digital images.

The second outcome lies in the launch of an innovative teaching. The e-Learning activity started with the support of the E-Learning Department of the University of Trento and it is still under development. The second edition of the project will be held in Trento and the corresponding workshop is scheduled for next January (2019). This will allow us to broaden and deepen the previous work, thanks to the involvement of the Department of Sociology and Social Research, the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science and the E-Library Division of the University of Trento, as well as the Faculty of Design and Art of the University of Bolzano/Bozen. The project crosses the different fields of scientific and humanistic knowledge and it focuses on methodological awareness as a fundamental tool for creating and spreading through image.


Law / Economics and management

Terrorism and sanctions in international, European and domestic law

The aim of the project was to organize a conference on the impact of international terrorism on the international, European and domestic legal orders. Being terrorism one of the most pressing challenges in modern society the purpose of the project was to discuss the mail legal issues on the topic. The conference entitled "Counter-Terrorism Sanctions: the International, the European and the National Legal Framework" took place on May 4th 2018 at the Accademia di studi italo-tedeschi di Merano.

In the first part of the conference has been underlined the persistent difficulty of reaching a global convention on terrorism. The current regulatory framework provides for sectoral or regional agreements (for example within the framework of the European Union or the Council of Europe). Moreover, it hasst been highlighted the procedural profiles of the sanctions and bodies involved in the adoption of sanctions. During the second session has been pointed out some of the critical issues of the UN system of sanctions. In the last session has been presented the theme of the action of the Council of Europe in the fight against terrorism.

The interdisciplinary approach and the collaboration between Professors and researchers of the Euregio Universities and of other Italian and European Universities was the added value of the conference. The initiative was quite successful considering the high participation of students but also of practitioners (different members of the Italian “Guardia di Finanza” and of the Carabinieri).

Bolzano-Innsbruck-Trento European Seminars

The two cross-border and interdisciplinary workshops brought together students and teachers from the three Universities in the Euroregion, Innsbruck, Bolzano/Bozen and Trento, offering a unique opportunity for discussing topics related to European integration among peers and supervisors from different Universities and with different disciplinary background.

Altogether more than 40 students from the three Universities have been given the occasion to present and discuss the results of their final thesis or their seminar papers with their peers and their supervisors. Participants who had already intensively worked on their final thesis or on their seminar papers could broaden their views on these topics through the discussions in the workshops and had occasions for networking with their colleagues and teachers from the other universities. The working language was English.

The objectives of discussing European integration from different disciplinary perspectives and national backgrounds have been fully attained: all participants were highly motivated, enjoyed the discussion and interaction and were thus satisfied (according to the results of questionnaire surveys). The awareness for the potential of cross-border initiatives (and the role of the EGTC herein) raised and the opportunity for networking among students and faculty has been appreciated.
