Research at the Department of Sport Science (ISW)

The Institute for Sport Science at the University of Innsbruck is an internationally recognized research program and home to a multidisciplinary team of experts in social and natural sciences. Our research focuses on advancing the science base around participation in sport and physical activity to improve performance, health and well-being.

As our Institute is located in the heart of the European Alps, we have a special focus on alpine sports. Our multidisciplinary team provides a truly holistic approach to sport participation including: childhood and adolescent development, identifying psychological motivators and benefits of partaking in outdoor sports, advancing training methods and equipment development, biomechanical analysis and mathematical modelling, sensorimotor integration and physiological adaptation, all the while appreciating that activities in mountain regions are costly and thus providing a comprehensive assessment of the management of outdoor recreation and identification of the associated risk factors.
