Our language courses are based on the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Four our language courses we have further subdivided the individual reference levels into so-called plus levels. The level description, which is given after the title of the course in brackets, is the language level that you should have reached by the end of the course.

Organisation of our language courses:

Basic Levels (levels partly A1, A1, A1+, A2 and A2+) corresponding to an elementary language use 

Basic levels 

Level partly A1
At this level the learner can introduce himself/herself and others and answer questions about personal details; he/she can interact in a simple way provided the interlocutor speaks clearly and slowly and is prepared to help.

Level A1
At this level the learner can understand everyday expressions and simple sentences aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete type; can introduce themselves and others and ask questions about personal details - e.g. where they live, whom they know and what things they own - and can answer questions of this kind; can communicate in a simple way if the other person is sympathetic and speaks slowly and carefully.

Level A1+
At this level the learner can understand simple sentences and common expressions in areas pertinent to life - e.g. personal and family details, shopping, leisure; he/she can describe his/her social and educational background, the immediate and concrete surroundings and needs in simple terms; he/she can carry out chores - e.g. while shopping or travelling.

Level A2
At this level the learner can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance – e.g. personal and family information, shopping, work, immediate environment; he/she can communicate in routine situations of information exchange on familiar and routine matters; he/she can describe in simple terms aspects of their background, education, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Level A2+
At this level a more active participation in conversations is possible, though some restrictions in communicative ability still remain and support is sometimes needed; e.g: he/she can start/keep going/end a conversation on limited, familiar matters and can deal with routine information in everyday situations, but still cannot fully realize their communicative intention and has to search for words. In addition, ability of sustained monologue is better developed, e.g.: he/she can express in simple words how they feel like and can talk about aspects of their life in detail, e.g. about people, places, job experience or education.

Improvement levels (levels B1, B1+, B2 and B2+) corresponding to an independen language use 

Improvement levels

Level B1
At this level the learner can understand the main ideas, if the other person uses the standard dialect and talks about familiar matters like work, school, leisure; can tackle most situations which could arise whilst travelling in the country where the language is spoken; can express themselves in simple and coherent sentences on familiar topics and areas of interest; can talk about experiences and events; can describe dreams, hopes and goals; can give reasons/explanations for their plans and views.

Level B1+
At this level the learner can handle a substantially wider range of information than at the B1 level in the following areas: he/she can take messages and can communicate enquiries, explain problems; he/she can provide concrete information required in an interview/consultation (e.g. can describe symptoms to a doctor) but does so with limited precision; he/she can explain why something is a problem and can summarise and give their opinion about a short story, article, talk, discussion, interview, or documentary and answer further questions of detail; he/she can carry out a prepared interview, check and confirm information, though they may occasionally have to ask for repetition if the other person’s reply is rapid or extended.

Level B2
The learner can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation; can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.; can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options .

Level B2+
At this band the focus on argument, effective social discourse and on language awareness which appears at B2, continues. However, the focus on argument and social discourse can also be seen as a new focus on discourse skills. This new degree of discourse competence shows itself in conversational management (co-operating strategies): The learner can give feedback on and follow up statements and inferences by other speakers and so help the development of the discussion; he/she can relate own contribution skilfully to those of other speakers. It is also apparent in relation to coherence/cohesion: The learner can use a limited number of cohesive devices to link sentences into clear, connected discourse; he/she can use a variety of linking words efficiently to mark clearly the relationships between ideas; he/she can develop an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail. Finally, it is at this band that there is a concentration of items on negotiating: he/she can outline a case for compensation, using persuasive language and simple arguments to demand satisfaction; can state clearly the limits to a concession.

Qualification level (Levels C1, C1+ and C2) corresponding to a competent language use

Qualification levels

Level C1
At this level the learner can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning; can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes; can produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Level C2
At this level the learner can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read; can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation; can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

 

Workload and ECTS-credits for our language courses

In order to achieve the given learning objectives, you will be expected to undertake additional and independent learning outside of lessons (UE/teaching units) in the form of homework, as well as preparing for lessons and exams.
