MoNTeS - Molecular Networks with Precision Terahertz Spectroscopy

Terahertz frequencies match the vibrations between large functional groups in molecular networks from macromolecules, nano-droplets to proteins. These oscillations may allow us to decipher the structure and the long-range interactions in large molecular systems. This yields a precise fingerprint of the molecule that is highly useful for sensitive trace analysis.


Our goal is to develop tools for terahertz spectroscopy of charged, mass-selected molecular systems with high spectral resolution. For this purpose a cryogenic radiofrequency ion trap is combined with a widely tunable, narrow-band terahertz laser system. This system allows us to excite of a dilute sample of molecular ions in well-defined internal quantum states.
