DoMInIon - Dynamics of Molecular Interactions with Ions

The atomistic dynamics of molecular collisions and chemical reactions have been a central research goal for several decades. Nevertheless, for reactions of atomic or molecular ions, the importance of quantum dynamics is barely understood, as quantum state-resolved experiments beyond total cross section measurement are very challenging and most theoretical descriptions still rely on quasi-classical approaches. The DoMInIon project targets this using novel crossed-beam velocity map imaging experiment.

dominion-setup

With the crossed-beam imaging technique differential reactive scattering cross sections are measured. These data can provide a wealth of insight into reaction dynamics and thereby allows us to target for example the following questions on ion-molecule quantum dynamics:

  • Which product quantum states are populated in molecular ions that are produced?
  • How do quantum scattering resonances influence the collision dynamics and the product state distribution?
  • Which momentum vector correlations govern the three-body break-up in ion-neutral reactions?
  • Which transition states are responsible for these dynamics?

If you are interested in participating in this project, we are always looking for motivated candidates who are interested in B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. research projects. For more information please come and visit us or contact Roland Wester.

This project is funded by the European Research Council under grant agreement No. 885479.
