The VERSA (Video gamEs foR Skills trAining) project is developing an innovative method to teach business and research relevant soft skills to PhD students through commercial video games. The project involves three universities of the Aurora network,  Universität Innsbruck, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Universidad Rovira i Virgili from Tarragona (Spain), as well as the Iberoamerican knowledge foundation gecon.es. The project is funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the EU. In Innsbruck, the project leader is Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kathrin Thedieck (Institute of Biochemistry).
On Tuesday 23 March the official online kick-off meeting took place, where the project was presented to more than 100 PhD students from the three universities. Over the next two years, they and other numerous doctoral students will participate in courses that will enhance their skills in areas such as team leadership, time management, critical thinking, and even creativity. These key qualification are difficult to teach through traditional teaching approaches, as their acquisition requires personal engagement and experience in interaction. Establishing new methods for soft skills is therefore central, in order to strengthen the university education with regard to these career-defining competencies for both science and entrepreneurship.
