On Wednesday, March 24th, 2021, the (virtual) Aurora Talks took place again - a regular information and discussion format within the Aurora Alliance activities. The topic "Teaching Development in and with Aurora - what does it mean?" generated a great interest among the invited internal teachers of the Universität Innsbruck. In addition to a presentation of the general objectives of the Aurora teaching development, internal possibilities of participation as well as concrete examples of (possible) Aurora teaching events were explained during the event. The program was rounded off by an open and lively panel discussion including questions from the participants.

Review Aurora Talks

A newly produced Aurora Promotional video of Universität Innsbruck, which portrays Univ.-Prof. Dr. Silke Meyer and her currently running Aurora course, marked the start of the approximately one-hour event.

After a short welcome and introduction of the participants of the virtual panel, the moderator and head of the Aurora Office,  Thomas Baumgartner, then gave the floor to Vice-Rector for Social Responsibility, Diversity and International Affairs at the University of Duisburg Essen, Barbara Buchenau. She described from her perspective the objectives of the Aurora Alliance with its focus on "social entrepreneurship & innovation" and the extent to which the underlying competence development should enable graduates of Aurora universities to work successfully on solutions for major social challenges.

Bernhard Fügenschuh, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Teaching, afterwards addressed in his statement the need to (further) develop collaborative and student-centered forms of teaching and learning, which, integrated into all levels of study - Bachelor, Master, Doctorate - enable a new form of internationalization and are to be implemented in the course of the Aurora Alliance. This is also linked to the demand for more flexible learning paths that enable students to set individual priorities within the framework of their studies.

Johann Katzlinger, Chairman of the Austrian Student Union, representing the student perspective, emphasized that international exchange and networking, such as through the Aurora Student Champions Scheme, enable new perspectives for students - especially in times of pandemic and reduced mobility opportunities. The Aurora Alliance's promotion of Future Skills will also strengthen important skills that are in high demand in both the scientific and non-scientific labour markets.

As National Expert for the European Higher Education Area & Deputy Head Aurora European Universities Office, Christina Raab used her concluding remarks to outline the planned next steps for the implementation of Aurora teaching development at Universität Innsbruck, such as the collection and visualization in teaching data management, but also the funding tracks for Aurora teaching planned for the fall.

The (chat) questions asked during the event will be successively processed in the next days and subsequently published on the FAQ page of Aurora Innsbruck.
