Autophagy is an essential mechanism in the process of UVB-induced senescence. Scientists of the Molecular and Cell Biology group have demonstrated that increased ROS production and impairment of proteasome system upon UVB irradiation lead to autophagy activation in Human Dermal Fibroblasts (HDFs). In this system, autophagy was shown to be essential for establishment of the senescent phenotype as blocking of this process leads to apoptotic cell death. Studies with 3D skin models revealed that autophagy related genes are also regulated upon UVB treatment both in the epidermis as well as in the dermis equivalents.
