Snow, Ice and Avalanche Mechanics

Objectives:

Learning the foundations of snow, ice and avalanche mechanics.

Contents:

  • ice and snow physics (including metamorphosis of snow)
  • mechanical properties of ice and snow, material models
  • stress state in the snow pack, deformation of the snow pack
  • snow pressure
  • avalanche release (essential factors and mechanism)
  • avalanche movement: classification, velocities, forces, dynamic models, hazard zones
