Advancing lacustrine paleoseismology in Chile

Jasper Moernaut led a study on earthquake-triggered sublacustrine landslides in Chilean lakes (published in Sedimentary Geology) with the participation of Ariana Molenaar. They found that subaqueous landslides can follow a cyclic pattern, which is governed by variability in slope gradients, sedimentation rate, tephra layers and seismicity.

Furthermore, Jasper participated in a Geology publication which discovered that different earthquake types can be distinguished by detailed analysis of lacustrine turbidites in mountain lakes. He also participated in a statistical exploration of paleotsunami data based on a coastal lake record in Chile, published in Seismological Research Letters.
