Workshop review "Tourism Futures in Khumbu & Mustang"

Impressions from the workshop on "Desirable tourism futures in Khumbu & Mustang"

On the 13th February 2020, we reflected together with about 60 stakeholders from the Khumbu and Mustang region in this workshop on past and present challenges, opportunities as well as emerging issues on tourism development in mountain regions.

The intended aims of this workshop were:

  • raising awareness of present and future problems for the tourism industry in both regions;
  • identifying challenges and opportunities, problems and solutions;
  • reflecting on desirable tourism futures and practical steps towards it;
  • sharing of knowledge, best practice and experiences between participants of both regions.

After an opening speech by Mr. Laxman Gautam (Expert Advisor to Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and Senior Manager at Nepal Tourism Board - below left), Ass.Prof. Robert Steiger (University of Innsbruck) gave a brief introduction to the programme of the workshop. Afterwards, Prof. Sanjay Nepal from the University of Waterloo (below right) gave a keynote adressing "Tourism and change in Nepal" to provide a foundation for the panel discussions.

Following this keynote, a panel discussion including Mr. Laxman Gautam (Expert Advisor to Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and Senior Manager at Nepal Tourism Board), Mr. Tripple P. Gurung (Tilicho Home, entrepreneur), Ms. Laxmi Gurung (entrepreneur, Mustang), Mr. Laxman Adhikari (political representative, Khumbu) and Mr. Ashish Shrestha (HoneyGuide Apps) on desireable tourism futures took place.

The afternoon was used for four interactive discussion sessions covering these topics:

  • Tourism development: New products, changing trends and patterns
  • Societal shifts: Migration and demographic development

The participants of these workgroups critically discussed existing strategies related to these issues and assessed possible solution and options for actions. Findings of these group discussions were presented by the participants.

Finally a keynote on "Natural hazards in Khumbu and Mustang" was given by Dr. Rainer Bell (University of Innsbruck), Prof. Monique Fort (Université de Paris) and Mr. Narayan Gurung (Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association), followed by a discussion.

During workshop we had many interesting and fruitful discussions covering a wide spectrum of backgrounds and experiences. Thank you for sharing with us and for your participation! Dhanyabad!
