Laboratory “Social Relevance and Public Interest”

In times of an increasing cultural diversification and vis-à-vis the pressing questions of today, scientific expertise has been in growing demand in the media, politics and various public sectors. Hence it has become a continuous requirement within the research area to maintain a close dialogue between science and socio-political practice. The usefulness and effectiveness of our work is based on a highly differentiated concept of politics, in tradition of the reflective and elucidating endeavours of the humanities.

The demand for expertise in general harbours the risk that it might be less driven by an actual need to gain insight than by an exploitation of scientific positions to legitimise discursive interests, certain attitudes or politics. It is thus the responsibility of critical and reflective scholars to challenge across-the-board solutions and lines of argument as well as curtailed explanations and to provide society with more nuanced perspectives.
