Research Field “Migration and Cultural Contact”

The research field “Migration and Cultural Contact” links two topics that lie at the heart of the research area “Cultural Encounters – Cultural Conflicts” and that are connected at multiple levels: migration(s) on a global scale, which lead to the rise of pluralistic migrational societies; and instances of cultural contact and dimensions of their social relevance. Both are key issues when it comes to a deeper understanding of the present as well as of the past; and both can only be pursued and analysed thoroughly from an interdisciplinary approach. Apart from empirical research, both topics as well the underlying concepts for their analysis will be addressed from a profound theoretical and methodological perspective. The multifarious ways of depicting and representing migration, globalization and cultural contact receive special attention.

On an institutional level engagement with these themes is reflected in the two research centres “Cultures in Contact“ and “Migration & Globalization“, which closely interact and cooperate.
