The Alpine Garden Mt.Patscherkofel is the highest botanical garden in Austria and has been owned by the University of Innsbruck since 1930. The favorable location directly at the timberline allows naturally occurring plant communities such as dwarf shrub heath, high forest, and tall herbaceous vegetation to be brought closer to the interested visitor by means of a signposted circular trail, thus stimulating reflection. Only the understanding of the sensitive balance of these habitats, which are strongly threatened by the development of the high mountains, can help to protect and preserve them.

The construction of a modernly equipped research station within the garden has made it possible for scientists to conduct a wide variety of studies directly on site throughout the year.
