Scientific achievements of Rudolf Kerschbamer awarded

Platform member Rudolf Kerschbamer was awarded the Science Prize of the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation for his outstanding achievements. Konrad Bergmeister, President of the Foundation, presented the prizes in the presence of the speakers Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Christoph Ulf.

Since 2008, the University of Innsbruck has been awarding the "Wissenschaftspreis für außergewöhnliche Forschungsleistung der Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse" on behalf of the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation in recognition of the overall scientific work of scientists at the University of Innsbruck. The prize is endowed with a total of EUR 10,000. Foundation President Konrad Bergmeister presented the science prizes to the winners. "In order to be able to present research results at this high international level as a successful university, one must have committed scientific staff and support and promote them accordingly," said Rector Tilmann Märk. "And what could be more motivating than the public recognition of outstanding performance, a recognition that would often not be possible without sponsors from the business and banking sectors. My thanks go to the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation and its President Konrad Bergmeister for their generous support of the University of Innsbruck". Two researchers were honoured this year for their overall scientific work: Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen gave the laudatory speech for his long-standing friend and scientific colleague Rudolf Kerschbamer. In addition, Erich Kistler was honoured, whose eulogy was delivered by the former Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History, the ancient historian Christoph Ulf.

Rudolf Kerschbamer

Rudolf Kerschbamer brought many new things to Innsbruck through his appointment. Through his studies in Vienna and longer stays at the Northwestern University in Evanston/Chicago he was and is part of a scientific community that stands for a kind of game-theoretical revolution in economics. Through the "area-wide" analysis of strategic interactions, the way of thinking changed decisively, especially with regard to questions of competition policy and industrial economics. The area that has been closely associated with the name Rudolf Kerschbamer for more than ten years is the analysis of markets for credence goods. Examples of such credence goods are services in the repair sector, but also in medicine. Rudolf Kerschbamer has made important contributions to research into this topic: On the one hand, he has summarised the colourful and diverse publication landscape into credence goods in a kind of standard model. Whenever today the role of liability, reputation or competition in markets for credence goods is discussed, the authors quote a corresponding article by Rudolf Kerschbamer, which he wrote together with Uwe Dulleck, a researcher in Australia. Rudolf Kerschbamer was also in charge of the design of the first laboratory and field experiments for the systematic investigation of individual behaviour in these markets. In collaboration with Matthias Sutter and Loukas Balafoutas, in particular, work was carried out which not only identifies but also quantifies the economic problems of one-sided information in credence goods markets. The close connection between clear and elegant models and experimental designs that have grown out of them is one of the unmistakable characteristics of Rudolf Kerschbamer's research. The quality of his scientific work, as well as his many years as chairman of the curriculum commission and member of numerous appointment commissions, has strongly influenced the Faculty of Economics and Statistics.
