Inaugural Lecture by Florian Bauer: What top acquirers do differently

On May 10th, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florian Bauer, from the department of strategic management, marketing and tourism, held his inaugural lecture. In his lecture, Florian Bauer gave an insight into his research projects on mergers and acquisitions, in which he is already engaged for more than 10 years.

At the beginning of the event, the rector of the University of Innsbruck, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr.hc.mult. Tilmann Märk, welcomed the newly appointed professor at the university. Alluding to the research interest of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florian Bauer, he described him as a "successful acquisition" for the University of Innsbruck. In addition to Bauer's research, Märk also highlighted his commitment to the "SMA Research Lab", a successful cooperation between the University and the Management Center Innsbruck. The dean of the School of Management, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Bank, joined his previous speaker, and praised Florian Bauer's engagement in the faculty board. Thereafter, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrea Hemetsberger, head of the department of strategic management, marketing and tourism, presented a creative laudation in which she described the nature of the newly appointed professor.

At the beginning of his subsequent inaugural lecture Florian Bauer first expressed his gratitude for his appointment, and underlined the merits of "the best profession there is".

The topic of the inaugural lecture were mergers and acquisitions, with which Florian Bauer has been dealing for 10 years in his scientific work. The title of the lecture was thereby "What top acquirers do differently: A look behind success factors for the exploration of different success paths". Merger and acquisitions (M&As) are often motivated by the prospect that a combination of two or more companies allow to save costs and to respond to disruptions in market structures. However, the desired success does not always arise after M&As. Florian Bauer pointed to research which shows that 40 - 60 % of all M&As fail. Although M&As have been the subject of research for around 100 years, there is still no definitive answer to the question of which factors lead to success. Popular hypotheses include strategic, cultural and personel components. Yet, these concepts are often defined to narrowly and studied in isolation. This implies that research often leads to contradictory results. Florian Bauer's own research sheds light on these contradictions, and shows that there are no monocausal relationships, from which global recommendations for action could be derived. Instead, it is necessary to carry out a nuanced case-by-case analysis, in order to derive suggestions.

Academic Career and Awards

Florian Bauer is professor for strategic management at the department of strategic management, marketing and tourism at the University of Innsbruck since October 2016. In addition, since 2012 he has been managing the "SMA Research Lab" together with Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kurt Matzler. Furthermore, Florian Bauer is department manager for strategy and organisation at the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). His research has already received several awards, among others twice the "M&A Science Award", and the "Best Paper Awards" by the SIG Strategic Management of the European Academy of Management. Together with Kurzt Matzler and Borislav Uzelac, he was moreover one of five nominees for the "Tudor Rickards and Susan Moger Paper Award". Besides his on research, Florian Bauer is refree at several journals, e.g. Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Strategy and Management, and the International business Review.
