Experimente an einzelnen ultrakalten Atomen, die entweder im freien Raum oder zwischen ultrahochreflektierenden Spiegeln mithilfe von Laserstrahlen gefangen werden. Ziel der Experimente ist es, kalte Atome als Quantenbits zur Quanteninformationsübertragung bereitzustellen. Aubau eines neuen Experimentes zur Untersuchung von modernen Kühlverfahren an einzelnen oder mehreren Atomen.

Experimente an einem Strang von Calcium-Ionen in einer linearen Paul-Falle. Aufbau der Apparatur und des Lasersystems, Laserkühlung an das Doppler-Limit, Anregung der Normalmoden der Ionenkette, Untersuchungen zur höchstauflösenden Spektroskopie am langlebigen Quadrupolübergang von Calcium. Auflösung dieses Überganges ist die Voraussetzung zur Kühlung in den Grundzustand und zur experimentellen Verwirklichung eines quantenlogischen Gatters.
