PhD positions

At this time (13th of August 2021) we are not looking for new PhD students in quantum photonics!


In our group you will either work on quantum dots as single photon sources and their application for the creation of multiphoton quantum states in one of our collaborative projects (on Euraxess / on Uni Job Offers) or on quantum interferometry in waveguide integrated photonic circuits, where we would like to study multiparticle complementarity and totally destructive interference (on Euraxess / on Uni Job Offers). Feel free to apply toward both positions.

MSc theses

Good MSc students are always welcome to embark on one of our exciting Masters Thesis topics (German) and are encouraged to take the course component "704863 Forschungspraktikum experimentelle Quantenphysik" (winter term 2020/2021) in our group to prepare them for the thesis research work. 

All master theses in our group are very close to the cutting-edge research in their respective fields and involve various experimental aspects where you are working with the most advanced devices and methods to solve current problems in the area of quantum photonics. Furthermore, you will learn about theoretical aspects of modelling quantum optical phenomena and of semiconductor physics. Altogether you will acquire an excellent basis for an industrial or academic career.

Foreign students beware that MSc students are not normally funded in Austria. Furthermore, please inform yourself about the necessary requirements and procedures for studying at the UIBK (read more).

BSc theses

We offer topics for Bachelor theses (German). If you are interested on one of our topics, please contact us, ideally at the end of the winter term. In general, a first organizational meeting of the course  "704710 Seminar mit Bachelorarbeit: Experimentalphysik" (summer term 2021) takes place in early February. 

internals: for students at UIBK

The experimental physics lab course "704718 PR Spezielles Fortgeschrittenenpraktikum B: Optik" (winter term 2020/2021) is rated with 5 ECTS, which corresponds to approximately three weeks of fulltime work including the preparation of a lab report.  In any case, the lab part should be treated with higher priority. If you are interested, please register with sufficient lead time (typically 1 week before the start of a semester) and contact the supervisor of your choosing. The supervisor in the photonics group is Prof. Gregor Weihs.

Stabilization of a triggered single photon source


Based on the creation of photon pairs through spontaneous parametric fluorescence, we can realize a single photon source through measurement of one of the photons. In the lab course your task will be to expand the existing source in such a way that the relative count of photons in the measurement arm stays constant, as accurately as possible, compared to the one in the trigger arm. In order to achieve that, you should couple the photon pairs into a fiber, separate them with a fiber beam splitter and use the trigger signal to stabilize the source on the one hand, and characterize stability on the other hand.
