Dr. Simon Dickel (University of Potsdam)
On 17.11.2025, Dr. Simon Dickel (Senior Lecturer in Gender and Queer Studies - University of Potsdam) will give an online talk in which he discuss the historical fiction Blackouts (Justin Torres 2023), focusing on the novel’s engagement with the 1941 report Sex Variants: A Study of Homosexual Patterns. The talk explores how Torres reimagines the figure of Edna Thomas (also referred to as Pearl M.), revealing her voice and agency in contrast to her archival misrepresentation. Dr. Dickel will reflect on Torres’s literary strategies, including the entanglement of visual and sonic effects of redacted text / erasure and how these techniques ethically reframe marginalized narratives.
The guest lecture will be hosted by Ass.-Prof. Dr. Mahshid Mayar in the frame of the Proseminar in American literature, "'A Weathered Tongue -- On Literature and its Sounds."
Registration is required in order to join the online event. Send an email to mahshid.mayar@uibk.ac.at to register for the event and receive the link.
