What do diplomats mean when they talk about "peace"?

Steering clear of studying phenomena such as security, violence and war instead of peace, inquiring into the multifaceted nature of peace, and linking peace closely to agency, this lecture introduces the concept of diplomatic peace. I do so in three steps: First, I provide a sensitizing conceptualization of the breadth and depth of peace. I contend that there are three faces of peace, i.e. restraint, compromise and polylogue, and further differentiate between different degrees of restraint (induced, cooperative and categorical), compromise (profitable, principled and iterated) and polylogue (extended, communal, deliberative). Then, I apply this heuristic to key UNGA resolutions that have passed unanimously since 1945. Studying how the actors we study define peace yields remarkable results. Diplomats make far-reaching promises about the kind of peace they purport to pursue. The resolutions strongly endorse cooperative restraint, principled compromises, and deliberative polylogues. Based on these findings, finally, I outline an agenda for further research on diplomatic peace.
