Anne Meylan

Anne Meylan is an assistant professor with Tenure-Track at the University of Zurich and the head of ZEGRa, the Zurich Epistemology Group on Rationality. She specialised in the ethics of belief. Her books and papers discuss topics such as our responsibility for our beliefs, our intellectual virtues, the value of knowledge and ignorance. Her new research project focusses on the nature and the specific normativity attached to the cognitive attitude consisting in suspending one's judgement.

My aim in this is to defend an account of suspension of judgement that captures the intuition that suspending judgement is something hard to achieve. According to the resistive account of suspension of judgement, to suspend judgment is to resist the inclination to consider as true a proposition that one would have considered as true if one had not resisted. An implication of this view is that suspending judgment as to whether a certain proposition p is true is just one among several ways of inquiring about p.
