Archaeological textiles are relatively rare finds in Mediterranean Europe, but many fragments survive in a mineralised or charred form. Numerous such textiles found in Greece, Italy and Spain and the surround regions have been analysed recently within the scope of the European Research Council funded project Production and Consumption: Textile Economy and Urbanisation in Mediterranean Europe 1000-500 BCE (PROCON), and provide important information about textile technology and role in ancient societies. Analysis of these textile fragments preserved in rich burials demonstrates substantial differences between the textile cultures of the various regions of Mediterranean Europe, which likely hark back to much earlier geographical affinities.
