This lecture deals with Panikkar’s philosophy of dialogue in general and in particular in its application to inter-religious dialogue (hereafter IRD). For Panikkar IRD is itself a religious quest, involving both a deep understanding of the other and in the process of oneself, both inter-religious and intra-religious. This entails the difficult process of trying to understand the other as she understands herself with all the epistemological, existential and religious challenges involved. Such deep understanding by no means precludes critique, but critique from a sympathetic and informed perspective. Panikkar distinguishes between dialectical and dialogical dialogues, the first one being more intellectual and discursive, the second more personal and existential. The goal of the first is deeper intellectual comprehension, while that of the latter is mutual personal transformation.
