The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas is an example of a portrait through which the painter’s face shines through more clearly than her sitter’s. In the book purporting to be the autobiography of her partner, Stein places her own name somewhere on nearly every page. If a portrait implies a visual image of the subject at a given moment, a biography, especially in Stein’s era – already the age of film - could be described as something of an expanded series of portraits with a narrative link. After all, film is exactly this – a series of still portraits stitched together to miraculously form the illusion of narrative. And Stein herself was in a position to know that any portrait an artist paints is, to some degree, a self-portrait.
