Report kick-off meeting EPoS

Beginning. 19th of March 2021 the kick-off Meeting of the new research area EPoS Economy, Politics and Society

Alignment. EPoS celebrates its beginning, creating space for joint research initiatives for Economy, Politics and Society. Over 400 scholars from the social and economic sciences, organizational psychology, media studies, and educational research have joined forces to pool their excellent research, yet quite fragmented knowledge; to understand current social developments and tackle pressing problems.

We are in the middle of the 'Corona years', an economic, political and societal challenge and an even greater sustainability responsibility that no longer allow for boundaries between scientific disciplines. More than 100 researchers from five participating faculties therefore met on March 19 for an 'epic new beginning' - the virtual kick-off meeting of the new research area EPoS Economy, Politics & Society. This seventh research area at the University of Innsbruck combines the strengths of existing collaborative Research Groups, successful Research Centres, and two Doctoral Programs with new fields of research that are currently being established.

Words. Vice Rector Tanzer is our first guest. Ulrike Tanzer does not miss the opportunity to share with EPoS her excitement about this research initiative, to encourage its members to become a major, meaningful resear area, and to express her hope that the merger of two former major research platforms 'eeecon' and 'Organizations & Society' will be a new platform for large-scale research projects. The elected spokesperson for the new research area, Andrea Hemetsberger, emphasizes the responsibility that science carries and the passion, curiosity, networking, collaboration, critical thinking, and rigorous methodology that research needs to meet its responsibilities.

Centres. The new research area consists of five major centres in Accounting Theory & Research; Education, Generations, Life Course; Innsbruck Decision Sciences; Social Theory; Strategic Leadership-Branding-Innovation. Organizational Participation and Meaning in Life, Innsbruck Media Studies, and the Innovation Cluster for Vocational Education and Training Research form important areas of research that reach across social and economic sciences and beyond university boundaries. Two existing doctoral programs will also become part of EPoS: #OrganizingtheDigital and Political Institutions and Leadership in a Contingent World. Empirical Economics and Sustainable Resource Management are already emerging as new centres and areas. During the kick-off meeting, the heads of the participating research centres, doctoral programs and research groups will give a brief insight into the work of their research centres and groups. In the course of the upcoming months, getting to know each other, joint activities and workshops will be a particular focus in order to network faculties, institutes, centres and divisions.

Talk. Keynote speaker Anna Dreber Almenberg (Professor of Economics, Stockholm School of Economics) provokes in the second part of the kick-off meeting with the question: "Which scientific results can we trust?" This question shakes the foundations of empirical research by questioning significance levels, revealing statistical errors, and testing the reproducibility of results - a particularly sensitive issue in the social sciences, where no or hardly any natural laws exist. We would like to thank Anna Dreber Almenberg for her exciting input, but also all the researchers who took the time to start together.

We look forward to a lively and productive research exchange and many shared meeting spaces.

Anna Dreber Almenberg

Team. Andrea Hemetsberger, head, Esther Blanco and Marcelo Jenny as vice heads together with Eva Zipperle-Mirwald and Josephine Pöll form the management and coordination team of the new research area. For an insight into our new research area EPoS and the participating research centres, please visit us here: Among other things, the keynote talk can be found here for "review", as well as numerous research contributions by participating researchers in our video library.
