Main Research Areas and Recognition


  • Electrochemistry: Chronocoulometry and thermodynamic evaluation of electrochemical data for accurate description of the electrochemical double layer, cyclic voltammetry[all], impedance spectroscopy.
  • Interface and surface science: Pioneer in in-situ techniques at the solid/liquid interface, such as electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS).
  • Laser induced temperature-jump methods (with Profs. A. Bandarenka, J. Feliu, V. Climent): Determination of the potential of zero free charge (pzfc) of Cu(111) and bimetallic Cu-based electrodes in combination with surface morphology/structure imaging. On Cu(111) modified with Ni(OH)2 or Co(OH)2, non-linear HER activity trends are found. The electric field, i.e. the interfacial water orientation/reorganization is determined and found to be a general activity descriptor for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media.
