Special Issue on Transrational Perspectives in Peace Education. Edited by Hanne Tjersland and Paula Ditzel Facci.
Excerpt from Introduction: Unfolding transrational potential
"As peace educators and researchers we are inspired by the Transrational Peace Philosophy developed at the University of Innsbruck, Austria (Dietrich 2012, 2013, 2018; Echavarría Alvarez, Ingruber, and Koppensteiner 2018). In resonance with the Innsbruck School’s transrational approach, we seek to cultivate a relational approach to peace education that honors the relationality and interconnectedness of educators, students, researchers and participants in all their human faculties. This includes to acknowledge and tap into not only the rational dimensions of being human, but also the emotional, mental and spiritual dimensions, in their complexity and in their ongoing and dynamic transformations. These transrational principles consistently animate our research and practice and motivate us to draw from and engage with theories of education, peace, and conflict transformation that inform such an approach. Concurrently, as our research and practice continuously meet other theories and the lived realities of peace and conflict, we are challenged to reflect upon, refresh and rearticulate our understandings of the ‘transrational’ as it changes and broadens, deepens and transforms in resonance with the contexts and relationships in place. Thus, this issue entails a dialogue between different researchers and practitioners as regards to how the ‘transrational’, in its varied shapes and expressions, is tapped into, understood, envisioned and engaged within multiple perspectives, approaches and processes of peace education."
