Congress of the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB)

The Congress of the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB) will take place from 29 September to 2 October 2026 at the University of Innsbruck. It is organised by the Faculty of Educational Sciences and the Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Innsbruck, the University College of Teacher Education Tyrol and the BMBWF initiative "Educational Innovation Needs Educational Research (B3)". Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Youth and Educational Research

The Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Youth and Education Research will take place from 6 to 10 July 2026 at the University of Innsbruck. It is aimed at students and researchers from Educational Sciences, Psychology, Sociology and related disciplines with an interest in empirical youth and educational research. Workshops are offered at basic and advanced level on qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches as well as on selected topics of youth and educational research. The programme is complemented by dialogue-oriented formats on methodological reflection, ethical issues and current challenges in research practice.

Book presentation
Education and socialisation. Further perspectives on the work of Helmut Fend

The book presented was produced following the award of an honorary doctorate by the University of Innsbruck to Prof. Dr Dr h.c. mult. Helmut Fend. It was recently published by Klinkhardt Verlag as a printed and open-access commemorative publication on the occasion of his 85th birthday. On 19 March 2026, the commemorative publication will be presented by the authors and ceremoniously handed over to Helmut Fend.

Workshop discussion "Participation in youth work and inpatient educational support"

15 November 2024

The network Jugendforschung.AT organised a workshop discussion on 15 November on the topic of "Participation in youth work and residential educational assistance" with the participation of the Universities of Innsbruck and Salzburg, the MCI and the Salzburg Ombuds Office for Children and Young People. Stakeholders from youth work and residential educational assistance, i.e. authorities, professionals, interest groups, but also affected young people and care leavers, came together to exchange views on current forms of participation, explore deficits and discuss possible improvements.

Honorary doctorate awarded and lecture: Education as a profession - a review

On 18 October 2024, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Helmut Fend was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Innsbruck as part of the Dies Academicus. On 17 October 2024, the honouree gave an academic lecture entitled "Education as a profession - a review".

Austrian Youth Research Conference 2023: Youth in times of crisis.

22 to 24 June 2023
The conference took place from 22 to 24 June 2023 at the University of Innsbruck. It was organised by the Research Centre "Education - Generation - Life Course", the Department of Educational Science and the "Austrian Network for Youth Research" in cooperation with various Austrian universities and universities of applied sciences as well as umbrella organisations for youth work and youth welfare.

Symposium "Pedagogical relationships in schools"

11 November 2022
The Symposium took place on 11 November 2022 at the University of Innsbruck. It was jointly organised by the Department of Educational Science, the Department of Teacher Education and School Research and the Edith Stein University of Teacher Education. The programme included two keynote speeches and six practical workshops. The programme was aimed at specialists from school practice and from the field of initial and further teacher training as well as student teachers and students of educational science.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Position for Dr Romain Jammal-Abboud

August and September 2022
Dr Jammal-Abboud from Zefat Academic College and Tel Aviv University (Israel) is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Education and the Research Centre "Education - Generation - Life Course" since October 2020. She is a renowned expert in the field of multicultural social work. Her research and practice are devoted to culture-sensitive social work Education and the welfare and health of children and families at risk in Israel. Dr Jammal-Abboud has visited the University of Innsbruck for several times in the past two years. For her upcoming visit in August and September 2022, she was granted a two-months post-doctoral fellowship position at the University of Innsbruck. The visit of Dr Jammal-Abboud will provide the opportunity to exchange on the topic of culture-sensitive social work education and to progress on joint research and publication projects based upon her research in Israel and the "Three Generation Longitudinal Life Course Study LifE".

Innsbruck Summer Seminar on Methods of Empirical Social and Educational Research 2022

4 to 8 July 2022
The Summer Seminar entered its fifth round this year after a two-year break due to the pandemic. Over the course of a week, four face-to-face workshops and one online workshop provided introductions to and in-depth knowledge of the statistical programme R, linear and logistic regression analyses, multilevel analyses and structural equation models. The Summer Seminar was organised by the Research Centre "Education - Generation - Life Course" and the teaching and research area "Generational Relations and Educational Research" of the Department of Educational Science in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Quality Assurance in the Austrian School System (IQS) and the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB).

Scientific Exchange on Social Work Education in Israel - Post-Doctoral Research Visit of Dr Jammal-Abboud

June 2022
In June 2022, Dr Jammal-Abboud was visiting the Department of Education to exchange on the topic of social work education and to work on a scientific publication. Dr Jammal-Abboud is a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Education and the Research Centre "Education - Generation - Life Course". In her publication, she discusses the cultural conflicts and tensions of Arab social work students and points to the need of implementing a multicultural approach of supervision in social work education in Israel. On the backdrop of this, she introduces a culture-sensitive supervision model that takes into account the challenging process of professional identity formation of Arab social work students in Israel. The model is directed towards entering a reflective process, transmitting and acquiring informal multicultural knowledge, and encouraging a culture-sensitive practice.

Post-Doc Research Visit of Dr Jammal-Abboud, Zefat Academic College and Tel Aviv University, Israel

July and September 2021
In July and September 2021, Dr Romain Jammal-Abboud was visiting the Department of Education to work on two publications on the topic of long-term effects of different parenting practices in late childhood on intergenerational relationships in adulthood based upon data of the "Three Generation Longitudinal Life Course Study LifE". Her research visit was funded by the research and teaching unit on "Intergenerational Research, Educational Research and Youth Studies" and the AIANI Fellow Pogram. Dr Jammal-Abboud is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Education and the Research Centre "Education - Generation - Life Course".

Workshop on "Culturally sensitive social work with disadvantaged families" by R. Jammal-Abboud, MA.

January 2020
On 24 and 25 January 2020, a one-and-a-half-day workshop on "Culturally sensitive social work with disadvantaged families" will take place. The workshop will be taught by Ms Jammal-Abboud, MA. who has developed a programme for culturally sensitive social work based on her many years of socio-pedagogical work with disadvantaged Palestinian families, children and young people in Israel. The workshop provides an understanding of the structures, values and gender-specific role patterns in families of Arab origin and introduces - theoretically and in practical examples - the basics of a culturally sensitive socio-pedagogical approach to disadvantaged families from other cultural backgrounds. The workshop is part of the elective module 5 in the Master's degree programme in Educational Sciences, which is organised by the teaching and research area "Generational Relations, Youth Research and Educational Research".

Presentation of the LifE study in the art exhibition "Research in Motion"

April to October 2019
To mark the 350th anniversary of the university, the "Organisations & Society" Research Platform has created a photo exhibition on the topic of "Research in motion". The exhibition aims to convey a "moving journey through the colourful world of research". 14 research projects are presented photographically - including the international and interdisciplinary generational and longitudinal study LifE, in which the teaching and research area "Generational Relationships, Youth Research and Educational Research" is involved. The exhibition can be seen in the Social Sciences building at Universitätsstraße 15. It runs from April to October 2019.

Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Social and Educational Research

The fourth Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Social and Educational Research took place from 1 to 5 July 2019. This year's Summer School once again offered researchers from all levels of educational research and related disciplines the opportunity to deepen their methodological knowledge under expert guidance. A total of 7 workshops were offered on selected methods of social and educational research. As in previous years, the Summer School was organised by the teaching and research area "Generational Relations, Youth Research and Educational Research" together with the research centre "Education, Generation, Life Course". In addition to the long-standing co-operation partner, the "Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB)", the "Federal Institute for Educational Research, Innovation & Development of the Austrian School System (BIFIE)" was also won as a partner.

Lecture by Dr Claudia Schreiner on the topic of "Equal opportunities in the Austrian school system"

On 5 June 2019, Dr Claudia Schreiner from the Department of Teacher Education and School Research at the University of Innsbruck gave a lecture on "Equal opportunities in the Austrian school system" at the invitation of the "Education, Generation, Life Course" research centre and the "Generational Relations, Youth Research and Educational Research" teaching and research area. Dr Schreiner is one of the best experts on the Austrian school system. In her lecture, she explored the question of what influence social background has on the acquisition of educational qualifications in Austria.

Guest lecture by Dr Liat Yakhnich from Israel

May 2019
On 22 May 2019, Dr Liat Yakhnich from Israel gave a lecture entitled "Problems of Adaptation of Immigrant Youth in Israel and its Consequences for Social Work" at the invitation of the research centre "Education, Generation, Life Course" and the teaching and research area "Generational Relations, Youth Research and Educational Research". Dr Yakhnich is head of the Department of Youth Development and a member of the Department of Criminology at Beit Berl College in Israel. In her guest lecture, she described the problems of young migrants in Israel and the corresponding support approaches of social work against the background of several studies.

Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Educational Research 2018

The Innsbruck Methods Summer School Summer School entered its third round with an extensive programme from 2 to 6 July 2018. In a total of six workshops over the course of a week, participants delved deeper into item response theory, structural equation modelling, multi-level analyses and large-scale assessments. More than 70 students, young academics and researchers from over 20 universities in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany were welcomed to the Summer School.

Guest lecture by Prof Dr Faisal Azaiza on the topic of "Social Work Education in Israel"

On 18 April 2018, Professor Dr Faisal Azaiza from the University of Haifa in Israel gave a guest lecture entitled "Social Work Education in Israel" at the invitation of the teaching and research area "Generational Relations, Youth Research and Educational Research" and the Management Center Innsbruck (Department of Social Work). Prof Azaiza is a renowned researcher in the field of social work and health sciences. In his academic work and in his educational policy activities, he is very committed to promoting cultural understanding between the different ethnic groups in Israel and to supporting Arab minorities. In his guest lecture, he gave an overview of the training of social workers in the multicultural and conflict-ridden environment of Israel.

Long Night of Research 2018 - Youth worlds in family, school and leisure time

April 2018
The teaching and research area "Generational Relationships, Youth Research and Educational Research" was also represented at the Long Night of Research 2018 with its own station. Under the question "What do young people's living environments look like today and does youth set the course for later life?", visitors were shown how different young people's living environments look today and how significant experiences in youth can be for later life. Posters and a film presented the research findings of several youth studies conducted by the teaching and research department. Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in a youth and education quiz and listen to short presentations on current topics in youth research.

Interdisciplinary conference "Youth - Lifeworld - Education". Perspectives for youth research in Austria.

From 16 to 18 November 2017, the interdisciplinary conference "Jugend - Lebenswelt - Bildung", organised by the LuF Generationenverhältnisse, Jugendforschung und Bildungsforschung at the Department of Educational Science, took place in Innsbruck. The conference was aimed at youth researchers in Austria as well as those responsible for Austrian youth work and youth policy. The conference provided a platform for Austrian youth research to present its research activities and initiated a discourse between research, practice and politics. The establishment of a "Youth Research" network is intended to improve the exchange of research, work and findings to date. Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Educational Research 2017

The Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Educational Research took place for the second time from 3 to 7 July 2017. It offered researchers the opportunity to deepen their methodological knowledge at a high level. The positive feedback from the first Innsbruck Summer School in 2016 prompted the organisers to hold the training event again with a slightly expanded programme. The Summer School was jointly organised by the Department of Educational Science, the Research Centre Education - Generation - Life Course at the University of Innsbruck and the Empirical Pedagogical Research Section of the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB).

Visiting researcher from Israel at the teaching and research centre

At the beginning of February 2017, Ms Jammal-Abboud was invited by the Department of Educational Science and the Austria-Israel Academic Network Innsbruck (AIANI) to spend a week as a visiting researcher at the Department of Intergenerational Relations and Educational Research. Ms Jammal-Abboud, MA. works as a researcher at the University of Haifa and as a lecturer in social work at various universities in Israel. She gave a guest lecture entitled "Between Individualism and Collectivism: Guiding Arab Social Workers in Israel through the Professional Socialisation Process" at Palais Claudiana on 1 February 2017.

Information event on European youth projects

November 2016
On 9 November 2016, a lecture and information event took place in the lecture theatre of the Department of Psychosocial Intervention and Communication Studies at the University of Innsbruck entitled "What's going on in European youth projects? The latest results from research!" took place. The event was organised by the Department of Intergenerational Relations and Educational Research (Helmut Fennes, Susanne Gadinger) and "InfoEck Tirol", the youth advice centre of the province of Tyrol. The latest results from the Austrian study accompanying the "Erasmus+: Youth in Action" programme and various local youth projects were presented to the large audience in a very vivid way.

1st Innsbruck Summer School on methods of empirical educational research

From 4 to 7 July 2016, the Department of Intergenerational Relations and Educational Research(Fred Berger, Katharina Lunardon) and the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB) jointly organised the 1st Innsbruck Summer School on Methods of Empirical Educational Research. One workshop was offered on structural equation modelling and one on item response theory. Over 30 (early career) researchers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland took part in the two workshops.

Study on intergenerational relationships in young adulthood

June 2016
In June 2016, a study on intergenerational relationships in emerging adulthood took place at the University of Innsbruck (Intergenerational Relationships in Emerging Adulthood). Over 600 students were asked about their life situation, their relationships with their parents and the support they receive from their parents. The study was conducted by staff and students from the Department of Intergenerational Relationships and Educational Research (Fred Berger, Markus Herrmann, Jasmin Sommer, Stefanie Mark).

"Long Night of Research" 2016

As part of this year's "Long Night of Research" , the Department of Intergenerational Relations and Educational Research (Fred Berger, Katharina Lunardon, Andrea Umhauer) presented two of its larger research projects (LifE + RAY) under the question "Is the course for life set in adolescence?". Visitors were able to obtain information via Video presentation and a wide range of documents. There was also the opportunity to conduct a qualitative interview or take part in an online survey.
