Study and teaching

The focus of teaching is on the historical, socio-structural, cultural and educational aspects of exclusion, segregation, inclusion and heterogeneity or diversity. Students acquire knowledge of welfare state and educational classification principles of disability as well as approaches to democratic participation, participation and self-determination and are able to assess these in an international comparison. In research-oriented seminars, independent questions are developed, steps in the collection of (qualitative) data are retraced and these are interpreted and analysed on the basis of qualitative-empirical evaluation methods.

Our teaching and research department offers special courses on Disability Studies and Inclusive Education in the form of introductory lectures, in-depth seminars and the seminar on the Bachelor's thesis in the Bachelor's degree programmes in Educational Sciences and Teacher Training with a Specialisation in Inclusive Education. In the Master's degree programmes in Educational Sciences, the teaching and research area is represented in elective module 1 "Social and Inclusive Education" and elective module 2 "Body and Gender" in addition to its participation in the compulsory modules.

In an ongoing interpretative research workshop, empirical data is discussed and analysed and various qualitative survey and evaluation methods are tested. The research workshop is open to PhD students and advanced Master's students. For the training of PhD students, the teaching and research area cooperates with the doctoral college of the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Innsbruck.

When organising teaching, it is important to the staff of the teaching and research area to offer diverse and varied opportunities for self-determined and collaborative learning and research. Dialogue-based and research-based learning as well as self-reflective working and writing processes are encouraged in the seminars. Teaching is designed to be as barrier-free as possible and enhanced by e-learning opportunities to guarantee students open online access to materials and texts.
