Research

Research activities of the Critical Gender Studies teaching and research area are realised through joint projects and individual research projects within the framework of a critically reflexive Educational Sciences. These deal qualitatively, empirically and theoretically with gender and gender relations in historically and socially perspectivised subject areas and thematic areas of Educational Sciences.

In doing so, objects that are coded as pedagogical are questioned and, alternatively, issues that are ignored in educational realities from a pedagogical perspective are addressed. To this end, the research work is based on concepts from social and discourse theory as well as power and practice theory, which are used to analyse and criticise gendering processes (of the subject, of action, of the social, of the pedagogical, etc.). In this way, object-theoretical determination and empirical observation are placed in an interrelationship and pedagogical phenomena are analysed as social reality and educational spaces as social spaces.

Questions that arise against this background for a critically reflective Educational Sciences focus, for example, on analysing gendered notions of normality that are historically and currently inscribed in the practices and theories of upbringing, education and care/care work and on how these are manifested in subjectivation processes. It is of interest, for example, how addressees behave towards gendered invocations and where ruptures, contradictions, reinterpretations and new interpretations occur. Reflexive qualitative-empirical analyses make it possible to clarify the conditions under which gender becomes meaningful. The appropriation and transformation of gendered forms of habitus in concrete social spaces can thus also be researched as educational processes. It is taken into account that the category of gender is always interwoven and interacts with other "axes of difference" - such as class, body, race, age - and power relations.

There are interdisciplinary research collaborations with academics from "Research Platform Centre for Gender Studies Innsbruck (CGI)", the working group "Care: Relations, Rights & Policies" and the doctoral programme "Gender and gender relations in transformation: spaces - relations - representations".
