Current research

Parental images of professionals in the school field. Transformation and continuity of education-related ideas of parents and parenthood using the example of practice-oriented educational journals in Austria

Re- and deconstructing education-related ideas of parenthood of professionals in the school field. To this end, the questions of how the object of knowledge of parents in the school field becomes visible and changes in a practice-oriented educational journal in the course of the twentieth century, which views and values prevail, what is addressed or not mentioned, how unequal life situations of parents are discussed, how the gender of parents is made relevant, for what purpose concrete parent-related calls for action are formulated, whether and how reference is made to other images of parents, which basic convictions come to light, which social and gender orders are (re)produced in the process. The pedagogical object of knowledge of parents in the school field is located in the respective economic, political and social development processes. (2019-2022)

Producing invisibility - strong theories and the "weak gender"

The study examines why measures that are intended to create gender equality (re)produce inequality, as well as the problem that "strong theories" often obscure large parts of real actions by drawing attention away from phenomena that do not conform to the theory. The question is to what extent a certain way of dealing with "strong theories" can also be considered the cause of luminosities. (2020-2022)

Ambivalences of self-care. Feminist perspectives. Cooperation project of the Research Network Gender, Care & Justice of the Interfaculty Research Platform Gender Studies, University of Innsbruck.

Burnout, loss of time, acceleration, exhaustion .... The media, politics and academia criticise the consequences of neoliberal transformation processes in the labour market on people. Women's unpaid care work for others is still the secret resource in our society's intergenerational and gender contract. But who cares for women? What's more, do women look after themselves? Ambivalences of "self-care" are discussed theoretically. Reference is made to discourses on "self-care" in the old and new women's movement and in women's and gender studies, to the conceptual and knowledge history of "self-care" in feminist theory, as well as to the post-structuralist concept of governmentality / governability. (2016-2017)

ParentsKnowledge - strong together. Research part of a development project in adult education in connection with ESF Priority 4 Lifelong Learning. Project partners: Educational and counselling institution Women from all countries|Innsbruck, Centre for Migrant Women in Tyrol|Innsbruck (Zemit), Vocational Training Institute Tyrol, Innsbruck (BFI). The research sub-project investigates how parents experience their children's primary school, specifically how they perceive and interpret which school practices and routines and which school-related parental practices they use and how. On the basis of the research, the research sub-project

(1) concrete starting points for generating a curriculum for training parent mentors, which will then be designed, organised and implemented by the other project partners;

The overall aim of the development project is to provide low-threshold support to parents in non-privileged circumstances in order to strengthen their children's participation and success in education. To this end, parents from this social group are themselves trained as parent counsellors, who offer talks for interested parents in private settings. (2011-15)

PerspectivesEducation Austria. The self-image of the 2nd generation. Scientific monitoring of the development project in adult education in connection with ESF Priority 4 Lifelong Learning. Project partners: Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI), Hafeklekar Unternehmensberatung und -forschung, Centre for Migrant Women in Tyrol (Zemit), Berufsförderungsinstitut Tirol (BFI). Funding body: Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture (bm:ukk) and European Social Fund (ESF).

In the research part of the project, the results of the analysis of statistical data (microcensus) are combined with a qualitative study, which is largely based on the concept of the scientific group workshop (Helmut Bremer). The qualitative study in turn becomes the starting point for a quantitative study. The interlinked partial results will in turn form the basis for action perspectives of adult education institutions. This complex study design poses major theoretical and methodological challenges. This challenge will be met by regular scientific monitoring of the research process by a team of experts from the Educational Sciences (Bremer Helmut, Rieger Christine, Wolf Maria, Yildiz Erol) - especially of the qualitative parts of the study, the formation of types of self-images and learning images, also in the mirror of external images, in order to improve the validity of the research results. In addition, ongoing counselling will be provided, particularly on complex methodological and theoretical issues that arise at key points in this complex project. In addition, the group workshops carried out in the project require intensive preparation. The quantitative study, which builds on the qualitative study, and the resulting action perspectives for adult education institutions require mutual mediation in order to arrive at a congruent and consistent result. Cultures of external childcare. Co-operation project of the Research Network Gender, Care & Justice of the Interfaculty Research Platform Gender Studies, University of Innsbruck.

The external care of children is analysed from historical, economic, political, socio-structural, institutional, legal, psychological and pedagogical perspectives, reflected upon from a gender-critical perspective and put up for discussion, e.g. through analyses of political discourses and debates in the field of childcare; through studies on the question of how the different relations of difference and inequality (class, generational, gender, [dis]ability, migration differences) structure care cultures and challenge professions and policies conceptually; by analysing the extent to which care cultures, including those of external childcare, emerge from forms of appropriation and coping with social situations, to what extent and how these social situations and cultural spaces of experience determine different social affiliations (class, migration, gender), so that social inequalities manifest themselves on a cultural level; durch Untersuchungen, wie Fremdbetreuung von Kindern sich sozialstrukturell und interkulturell im Kontext von Migrationsgesellschaften herausgebildet haben, welche sozialen Funktionen ihnen zu kommen und wie kulturelle Faktoren mit sozialstrukturellen und institutionellen Bedingungen zusammenwirken; durch Studien zu Ursachen und Folgen so wie Wandel und Kontinuität von Gewalt in unterschiedlichen institutionellen Fremdbetreuungsverhältnissen; durch Untersuchungen der Legitimationsfiguren und Selbstdeutungen von Menschen in ihren Betreuungsfunktionen und -positionen als z.e.g. mothers, fathers, parents, as educators, kindergarten teachers, nannies, au pairs. Care is thematised as a question of recognition and justice, gender democracy and social inclusion, freedom of choice and diversity of lifestyles, the construction of autonomy and commitment, the welfare state framework and civil society coherence. Care and nursing in Austria - a gender-critical perspective. Co-operation project of the Gender, Care & Justice Research Network of the Interfaculty Research Platform for Gender Studies, University of Innsbruck.

The project examines the causes and consequences of the unequal distribution of unpaid and paid care work between women and men as well as the preservation of this division of labour (private patriarchalism) through the division of labour between the welfare state and women (public patriarchalism), the institutionalisation of the traditional gender difference in care institutions, the lasting gendering of education and care cultures in Austria, the gendering of education and the gendering of care cultures in Austria. education and care cultures in the public and private spheres, the historical continuities of policies and care cultures and the necessary conceptualisation of a care economy that calculates care as socially necessary work. (2008-10).

Conglomerations. Everyday practices of subjective protection. Co-operation project of eleven habilitated scientists from different universities in Austria and Germany. Topic of my part of the project:Parental educational practices in the field of tension between social heritage, the dissolution of boundaries in education and the return of social insecurity.

In a structure of eleven sub-projects communicating with each other, each with different contents and procedures corresponding to the diversity of modern ways of life, we are looking for abilities of contemporary people that enable them to respond to inconsistent and contradictory social offers and demands with everyday practices of subjective security and thus bring them together to form an individual security of life suitable for everyday use. According to the central hypothesis of the project, everyday people use all useful fragments of cultural semantics for their subjective security. They draw on both socially constructive and socially destructive elements and develop conglomerating practices in dealing with them. Modern individuals secure their everyday existence "by all means", so to speak, not only through acts of identification, but also through acts of "alienation", of distancing. Not only through affinity and similarity, but also through rejection and alterity. In societies with "little identity", people seem to need destructive identifications to create a pragmatic security in life, to stabilise themselves not only through humanity but also through counter-humanity. The antisocial tendencies to form prejudices, enemy stereotypes and derogatory to contemptuous demarcation, to everyday and political persecution, to everyday racism and sexism, which have already become habitual in almost all Western societies alongside prosocial behaviour, xenophobia, hostility towards women, children and the disabled or social defamation (e.g. of the unemployed or welfare recipients) can thus be conceived as integral components of "normal" everyday identities rather than as "deviant behaviour" and can be dealt with analytically and politically. (2007-2010; project discontinued due to lack of project funding).

Doctoral Programme "Gender, Care and Justice. The Politics of Human Needs". Interdisciplinary cooperation project (together with seven habilitated colleagues from the Research Platform Gender Studies, University of Innsbruck).

The research area of the doctoral programme GENDER, CARE AND JUSTICE concerns specific aspects and problems of human life that have to be solved in all societies. The construction of gender relations as well as the organisation of care is determined by historical traditions, cultural discourses, economic resources and processes, profit-oriented enterprises and non-profit organisations, political decisions, social institutions and by legal frameworks. Until now the production of knowledge about care and gender has proceeded predominately along different disciplinary tracks, each with its own particular perspectives. The doctoral programme will offer the possibility to link these different aspects and study the often hidden assumptions of the scientific disciplines. This doctoral programme will integrate the research in a broader and interdisciplinary context and thus allow a deeper understanding of the problem and introduce better conditions for looking towards new problem solutions. Liveliness and education. On the relationship between pedagogy and eugenics. Funding body: Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), APART (Austrian Programme for Advanced Research and Technology).

Pedagogy and eugenics are analysed as two traditional attempts to discipline human life in the history of modernity. The idea of "human improvement" is inherent in both educational and biotechnologies, and both presuppose a demystification of the human being as something predetermined and unavailable, which is dependent on a high degree of medical manipulation and pedagogical control. At the centre of such improvement concepts is motherhood as the pivotal point in the creation of life and its "rearing". The research project has therefore contributed to a history of motherhood in its relationship to pedagogical and medical socialisation, as well as to the history of childhood. (2000-2003).

Eugenisation of motherhood. Scientific discourses on the reorganisation of reproduction using the example of Austria 1900-2000.

In my habilitation thesis "Eugenisierung der Mutterschaft. Scientific discourses on the reorganisation of reproduction using the example of Austria 1900-2000", I examined the causes and consequences of eugenic interventions in the reproductive culture of our society by 20th century medicine. Scientific interventions which, at the turn of the 21st century, made biotechnical selections at the beginning of life socially acceptable and the task of family formation. In my work, I pursue a question that is paradigmatic for gender studies, which is analysed historically and systematically using the example of "eugenics": The question of the cultural and social treatment of the generative nature of human beings and of the historically created relationships and practices that are necessary for the production and creation of a generational succession. Since women and their generative potency are the condition for the possibility that human life bound to the bodily form can develop and be brought into the world, women, their generative potency and their sexuality are at the centre of the cultural approach to the existential and social task of providing for offspring. Gender orders of a given society and culture thus always result from the socio-cultural organisation of the task of human communities and societies to compensate for death and to provide for offspring. They are also always an implicitly and explicitly historically given social response to the existential challenge of life and death.

Gender relations are inextricably linked to the creation of a generational succession. One of the questions guiding our knowledge has therefore always been which ideal images of family, parenthood, motherhood and fatherhood as well as childhood have been brought about or supported by the eugenic interventions in the reproductive culture of our society by 20th century medicine and how these are gendered. At the same time, these scientific concepts are subjected to a gender-reflective analysis and the concepts of gender, masculinity and femininity that are incorporated into the development of biotechniques of procreation and selection are made transparent.

Thus, one subject of the study and the associated eugenisation processes with regard to heredity, procreation, conception, pregnancy and birth is that of gender, which cannot be separated from the fact of "natality" or "that human beings to this day all come into the world through birth" (Hannah Arendt). By placing the fact of natality in a central relationship to gender, to gender relations and to the task of education, a central trace of the work can be heard: the generational relationship associated with gender relations and the questions of education and socialisation against the background of the vulnerability and finiteness of human existence. To this end, the study is able to show how and why parenthood is rationalised and modernised by the natural sciences, what demands on successful upbringing and education parents have been increasingly confronted with in recent decades as a result, what duties arise for mothers in the name of the child's welfare and to what extent biotechnical selection at the beginning of life represents a general influencing factor of childhood today.

With regard to the question of which factors in the 20th century were decisive for the transformation of "reproductive culture", of family, parenthood and childhood in Western society and culture, in addition to economic and political factors, scientific factors in particular are assigned outstanding importance as the determining factor of change - above all natural science. "Modernity's natural science has been modernity's most effective social science" (Lawrence Hazelrigg). The discourse-analytical study is thus also able to make a contribution to the history of knowledge and science of eugenics from the perspective of gender studies.

The study is orientated towards a historical-sociological study of science that combines aspects of the sociology of science and the sociology of knowledge from a social and gender-critical point of view. Science is thus analysed as a social fact by investigating the actual history of science in its relationship to the reproduction of the genre and thus to the generative and regenerative aspects of social formation in its bodies of knowledge. Methodologically, the concepts of "historical sociology", as they have been discussed since the end of the 1970s, especially in the Anglo-American and French areas, are decisive, in addition to the reference to concepts of social-theoretical gender studies and critical science studies. Post-modern gender relations

In my dissertation "Quasi insane. Nachmoderne Geschlechterbeziehung", which was published in the series "Schnittpunkt Zivilisationsprozess" by Centaurus Verlag (1995), I deal with the crisis of gender relations in the context of the debate on individualisation in the social sciences, which argues, among other things, that social relations are subject to increasing de-traditionalisation and lead to the challenge of a radicalised shaping of the self. Of interest is whether and how the dismantling of the gender order of bourgeois modernity becomes effective in contemporary couple relationships from the perspective of women. What happens when "femininity" and "masculinity" no longer provide projective relief, when central positions that organise the "other" in the gender relationship are eroded? Methodologically, the study was realised using a group discussion procedure. To summarise, it can be seen that the gender knowledge of identity discourses that has become effective in modernity still dictates the text of the "gender roles" of women and men, while in the individual speech of women and men today it has become the echo of a discourse whose imperatives are no longer binding. The "language rubble" is still dragged along, although its symbolisations can hardly be applied to the relationship events of the present. Nevertheless, the symbolisations of the modern gender order still exist even if almost nothing corresponds to them on the level of reality. This reveals the fragility of a gender-identified subject, as it can no longer rely on a stabilising gender order as a cultural superego community.

Female life planning. Women's complicity in the process of their socialisation

In my diploma thesis "Weibliche Lebensplanung. A feminist work on the complicity of women in the process of their socialisation" (1987), I deal with the question of women's life planning and their related identity work. The work is situated in the context of the feminist victim-perpetrator debate and the complicity debate, which discuss and theorise the self-acting dimensions of female socialisation that confirm the female status in the gender order and gender relations. Methodologically, the study was realised qualitatively and empirically, specifically using "collective memory work" (Frigga Haug), with which the specific individual appropriations of manifest and latent socially formed self-images, images of others and desires of the test subjects are worked out in their contradictory versions.
