The project focussed on the influence of public images of Islam on the life plans and religious orientations of young people with a Muslim background in Austria. It also analysed how access to social media affects their orientations. A total of 138 interviews were conducted with young people and analysed for this research question.

As part of the research project Political Literacy in the Migration Society (PLiM), forms of political articulation by 8th grade students in selected schools in the cities of Berlin, Vienna and Zurich are being analysed. The investigation of pupils' political articulation is designed in such a way that forms of democratic education, their social (enabling) conditions and effects can be empirically and theoretically identified and theorised. Insofar as transnational migration phenomena characterise social life in cities the most, education in relation to the (global) migration society represents a fundamental political requirement of the present.

Faces of migration: Tyrolean young people explore their family migration history

The project aims to change people's perspectives on their own family history. In this context, we explore their family migration histories together with pupils. The aim is to open up new horizons and make previously invisible knowledge and potential visible: How are people involved in family and other cross-border networks? How do they move in transnational spaces? How do they combine different things and develop their own life plans? Pupils from two secondary schools in Innsbruck and the Stubai Valley (Fulpmes) are investigating these questions. The young people are perceived as experts in their own lives and are actively involved in the entire research process: they develop their own research questions and conduct interviews with their parents and relatives, among others. In addition, they use ethnographic field research to search for traces of migration in the individual neighbourhoods.

Migration of spaces. Identity through architecture in the context of Turkish remigration

In a transdisciplinary collaboration between spatial and social sciences, the project analyses the design and spatial characteristics of the architecture built by returning or commuting migrants in Turkey. By analysing the building culture of the returnees, conclusions can be drawn about the continuity and change of their way of life. The aim is to typologise the resulting architectures against the background of the migrants' transnational connections, a typology of spaces in the context of Turkish remigration.

Transnational relationships change the image and structure of the city. The intercultural reality of migrants and the question of identity through architecture are brought into context. Based on spatial theoretical approaches, we place physical space and social phenomena in a reciprocal context. In addition, we draw on concepts of migration research that thematise the connections between migrants' countries of origin and host countries. This ties in with the debate on transnationalism.

The subject of artistic urban research is urban space and architecture in Turkey. In addition to the urban space, around 20 houses and flats will be analysed. In addition, the urban space is recorded for three return scenarios at exemplary locations: Remigration to an urban context, the often rural regions of origin or coastal holiday areas. In addition to secondary analyses, data will be collected at the study locations using social and visual science methods. A documentation and mapping of houses and urban space will be documented using artistic methods and contextualised through qualitative interviews.

Artistic, spatial and social-scientific approaches will be integrated in an exhibition and a publication and presented to a social public that goes beyond a specialised audience. In addition, conference and discussion events are planned to accompany the exhibition and the results will be analysed in the form of publications in specialist journals.

Life strategies of migrant families in marginalised neighbourhoods in the context of education and employment

The lives of migrant families in marginalised neighbourhoods often take place under difficult economic and social conditions. The families develop specific strategies for coping with their everyday lives. Research on this topic has largely remained a research desideratum in both migration and urban research. The aim of the research project is therefore to investigate the life strategies of migrant families in marginalised urban districts in a qualitative and complementary manner in an international context (D-A-CH). The focus is on educational and employment strategies. The question is what resources the families concerned in marginalised neighbourhoods have at their disposal, what strategies they develop against the background of different local, social and political contexts and what similarities and differences can be identified in the international context. Both collective family strategies and the perspectives of individual family members are analysed in their intergenerational and gender-related dynamics. The study will be conducted in marginalised neighbourhoods in Basel (CH), Klagenfurt (A) and Freiburg (D). It is a complementary study in a transnational context.

Muslim milieus in Austria. A compass for everyday religious practice

Although half a million Muslims now live in Austria, there are hardly any scientific studies that focus on the diversity of the Muslim population's living environments and the differences in everyday religious practices. The research project 'Muslim Milieus in Austria' seeks to remedy this situation.

In public perception as well as in the media discourse in Austria, the distorted idea prevails that Muslims are a homogeneous population group and live their faith in the same way. The stereotype that all Muslims without exception are strict believers, practise the various religious pillars of Islam and go to a mosque every Friday is extremely widespread.

The study 'Muslim Milieus in Austria' is working to counter this false image. The research project aims to capture the range of variation in how Islam is lived in everyday life in Austria and how different the milieu-specific backgrounds and lifeworlds of Muslim people in Austria are.

Turning hardship into a future? Life plans of young people with a migration background from marginalised districts using the example of Klagenfurt

In public discourse, young migrants often appear in problematic contexts, even though they were born, raised and socialised in Austria. Neighbourhoods in which the majority of migrant families live are also almost reflexively perceived as "social hotspots" or "parallel societies". These are often neighbourhoods that are structurally disadvantaged and often stigmatised territorially. In research, such neighbourhoods are examined in the context of marginalisation and segregation. From this research perspective, the everyday practices and subjective views of young people are hardly ever considered. As there are hardly any systematic studies on the life practices of young people in marginalised neighbourhoods in Austria, this research project reverses the perspective and focuses on them.

The study primarily examines the life plans and visions of the future of young people in two neighbourhoods in Klagenfurt that have a bad reputation among the local public: St. Ruprecht and the Fischl high-rise housing estate. The main question is: How do young people from migrant families manage to develop sustainable life plans under difficult living conditions in marginalised neighbourhoods? Various qualitative methods are used for the study. In addition to field observations, semi-narrative interviews are used as data collection instruments, which provide insights into the life practices of young people. In the analysis, we are guided by the concept of "Grounded Theory" (Glaser/Strauß 1967) and the concept of "Understanding Interviews" by J.-C. Kaufmann (1999).

The change of perspective will raise new questions, reveal new perspectives for migration research, youth research and educational research and thus generate new insights.

Diversity at second glance. International resources in Carinthia

Carinthia is perceived as backward-looking and right-wing populist due to its political culture at European and national level. A study conducted by Karmasin market research on behalf of the Federation of Austrian Industries in 2010 once again confirmed this negative image. This shows just how damaging the state's reputation has already been. The historically grown diversity and internationality of Carinthia has largely disappeared from perception as a result. In other words: Carinthia's international resources in particular have been obscured, excluded or simply overlooked by an image of being closed to the world. These include diverse migration processes, the historically determined multilingualism, the great importance of international tourism, globally networked companies and the cross-border location in the Alps-Adriatic region.

In this project, the relevance of interculturality, transnational references and the concrete effects of global developments on the everyday life of the population were deliberately analysed. These positive aspects have so far been largely ignored or not systematically analysed, not only in public perception, but also in scientific presentations.

The study focussed on the provincial capitals of Klagenfurt and Villach. On the basis of cross-border biographies, life plans and economic endeavours of people with a migration background, we worked out the extent to which this diversity has contributed to the quality of life in both cities. The aim was to make migration-related diversity visible and communicate it as such to the public.

Based on the findings of the study, an attempt was made to create an intercultural city map of Klagenfurt and Villach, which would then be made available to authorities or educational institutions, but also to interested citizens and tourists.

The results of the study can also be used as a model in other cities, institutions or commercial enterprises for the development of diversity-conscious guiding principles. "Diversity management is increasingly playing a constitutive role in all areas of society and the results of the study offer ideal starting points for public communication(final report available).

The success of international students. Factors for the successful completion of the Vienna University Preparation Programme (VWU)

With regard to the transition of foreign students from so-called third countries into the Austrian higher education system, the pre-study programme of the Viennese universities plays a central role. If it is not possible to provide proof of sufficient knowledge of German, a supplementary German examination (EPD) must be taken in the Vienna University Preparation Programme (VWU) after admission as an extraordinary student. Internal estimates assume a relatively high proportion of VWU students who do not achieve this goal.

The main aim of the study was to find out what the reasons for failing or dropping out of the course might be and which factors have a positive effect on the successful completion of the preparatory examination and the supplementary examination. Do these factors lie in the student's personal, social or institutional environment? How do these conditions affect the student's progress? What problems and experiences are there regarding the transition to a regular degree programme at Viennese universities? What measures can be taken to ensure that a higher proportion of students successfully complete the courses and the EPD and that the transition to a regular degree programme and its continuation is as unproblematic as possible?

The aim was to develop a catalogue of criteria containing specific recommendations for intervention and support. The overall study consisted of the following phases and work steps:

1. context analysis
2. problem analysis
3. quantitative cohort analysis
4. graduate survey

After a context analysis was first carried out to determine the social, political and legal situation of students from so-called third countries in Austria, a problem analysis was carried out based on problem-centred, semi-narrative interviews. The aim was to generate problem-centred hypotheses, which were tested in the following steps. A so-called 'quantitative cohort analysis' was then carried out on this basis, i.e. a progression analysis in which all students who had started the preliminary study programme were interviewed during the 2010/11 winter semester. Subsequently, the successful transition process into the regular degree programme was examined in the graduate survey. This sequence of investigation steps made it possible to develop recommendations for action that guarantee the conditions for successful study at Vienna's universities at an early stage(final report available).
