Prospective students who are BHS graduates can find an overview here of how formal BHS credits and post-secondary qualifications may be recognised (for the University of Innsbruck – LFUI – in accordance with Section 78(1) of the University Act; for the other participating higher education institutions in accordance with the relevant higher education laws), as well as other higher-level training programmes, e.g. the College of Social Pedagogy.

None of the information on this page is binding. The comparisons provided are intended to help prospective students make informed decisions and reflect cases where prior learning has been recognised in similar circumstances. Students are only entitled to a formal decision once they have been admitted as full-time students on the relevant degree programme. Any preliminary information provided regarding eligibility is at the discretion of the relevant body. As the project progresses, this website will be continuously updated to include further degree programmes with recognition options.

The RPL Project

The course of study at vocational upper secondary schools (BHS) and higher education institutions for teacher and childcare training lasts five years. Consequently, in accordance with the ‘International Standard Classification of Education’ (ISCED), these schools are classified at Level 5 (compared to the four-year general secondary schools (AHS)), whereas AHS are classified at Level 3. In order to recognise this higher educational standard and to enable BHS graduates to make a transparent decision regarding their future educational path in the Tyrol and Vorarlberg regions, the University of Innsbruck (LFUI), in collaboration with the other Tyrolean higher education institutions and FH Vorarlberg, and funded by the Province of Tyrol, launched the project for the recognition of (formal) prior BHS learning – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which concluded on 30 June 2017 after a three-year run. Even after the project has ended, the options for taking prior learning into account will continue to be kept up to date. The legal basis for any possible recognition by the LFUI is Section 78(1) of the Universities Act (UG), whilst for the other participating higher education institutions it is the relevant higher education acts. Another aim of the project is to reduce the pressure of the degree programme, so as to give students more time, for example, to attend advanced modules, to set their own academic priorities, or to better balance their studies with their careers.
