In the FWF research project of 'Exploring value-based modes of production and consumption in the corporate food regime', the Working Group on Agricultural and Regional Sociology investigates how different niche approaches to the food system affect the food regime. A project description can be found here.

So-called Alternative Food Networks such as Solidarity Farming, Food Cooperatives (Food-Coops) or Community Fields are largely found in (peri-)urban spaces. They emerge as an association of producers and consumers, and values such as fairness, trust, solidarity in a long-term cooperation are in the foreground. Agricultural production in general, however, takes place mainly in rural areas. It is still unexplored how alternative food networks and associations of producers and consumers can establish themselves in rural areas. In the context of this master thesis, we want to investigate which approaches of Alternative Food Networks exist in the rural areas of Switzerland, how they came into being and what is decisive for their continued existence. In addition to a document analysis, qualitative empirical social research approaches are planned as a methodological approach.

Interested master students are welcome to contact Ass.-Prof. Dr. Rike Stotten for further information.

Start of the master thesis by arrangement.

University of Innsbruck

Information about the University of Innsbruck can be found here. The University of Innsbruck emphasizes equal opportunities and diversity in its personnel policy. The University of Innsbruck aims to increase the proportion of women and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. This applies in particular to management positions and scientific job offers. In the event of underrepresentation, women with equal qualifications will be given preferential consideration.

Project Description: Affluence and the Gender Gap in STEM Study Choices

Wider research context

Surprisingly, the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields of study is greater in more affluent societies. This Gender-Equality Paradox (GEP) is theoretically explained by individuals' greater economic opportunities for gendered self-expression. However, it is largely unknown how individual-level household affluence affects men's and women's STEM study preferences and choices, let alone whether household affluence accounts for GEP. In addition, the literature has not examined mediators of household affluence effects and variation in these effects across country contexts.

Research questions/hypotheses

Our goal is to address these  research gaps and answer four research questions: (a) How does household affluence affect the gender gap in STEM study preferences and choices?; (b) To what extent can household affluence account for the positive effect of societal affluence on this gender gap?; (c) How can we account for household affluence effects on the gender gap in STEM study preferences and choices?; (d) To what extent is the effect of household affluence on men's and women's STEM study preferences and choices moderated by contextual factors such as societal affluence, welfare provision, and socio-economic inequality?

We test two opposing expectations: first, household affluence widens the gender gap in STEM study preferences and choices through more gender-specific life goal preferences; second, household affluence narrows this gap through more gender-egalitarian attitudes and ability patterns. We expect household affluence to have a smaller effect on (gendered) STEM study preferences and choices in more affluent and welfare-supportive settings.

Approach

We answer the research questions in six work packages. The first two work packages are cross-national comparative and use data from PISA and TIMMS to test the effect of household affluence on gendered STEM preferences, to test whether household affluence can account for the societal affluence effect, and to test country-level moderators of household affluence effects. The other four work packages focus on Germany because of substantive (pronounced vocational education) and pragmatic reasons (unique data from NEPS). We test the effect of detailed household affluence measures on gendered STEM study choices, test whether these effects are moderated by state-level factors, test mediating factors of these effects, and test the effect of study major traits, gender, and household affluence on study choices.

Innovation

Studies on gender and social origin differentials in STEM study intentions and choices leave some important questions unaddressed. We aim to advance these studies and answer the questions. In doing so, we shed more light on the conditions for greater female representation in STEM.

Primary researchers involved

Two project members will carry out the project under the supervision of and in collaboration with the PI.
