I am a master student of Ecology and Biodiversity, and my master thesis is part of a Tyrolean grouse monitoring project. In my thesis, I focus on genetic analyses of the population structure of black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix). For DNA analyses, faeces were collected in East Tyrol. The population genetic approach I take allows to analyse the population size of black grouse as well as their spatial occurrence. The work aims to gain new insights regarding the stability and health of the population. Furthermore, this project acts as a link between research and active environmental protection. Gaining knowledge of the species will help to decide on necessary measures to ensure the birds’ well-being. This makes this project precious and valuable for the environment – and consequently also for me.
