Welcome to Prof. Ryan Stewart

Prof. Ryan Stewart is an Associate Professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech. He is visiting the University of Innsbruck as a Fulbright Scholar for Summer Semester 2022, hosted by Prof. Georg Leitinger.

His research focuses on understanding the movement of water, nutrients and contaminants in various landscapes, with a primary focus on agroecosystems.

While at the University of Innsbruck, Ryan will work with instrumented lysimeters to better understand interactions between water fluxes, soil properties, and plant health in alpine grasslands. This work will include analysis of data previously collected by Prof. Leitinger and colleagues, and collection of new measurements on plant leaf temperatures and evaporation rates under different conditions of soil water availability.

Ryan will use these data to model how interactions between plants and soils affect water movement and uptake. He will work with graduate students in the Environmental Management of Mountainous Areas (EMMA) M.S. program, the Ecology and Biodiversity M.S. program, and the Biology Ph.D. program, and will teach lecture and seminar courses on soil properties and hydrological processes.
