Welcome to Prof. Markus Reichstein

Prof. Markus Reichstein, an Earth System Scientist, director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry and Professor for Global Geoecology at the University of Jena, is visiting the Institute of Ecology as an LFUI Guest Professor, hosted by Prof. Michael Bahn. Markus’ research focuses on understanding the interactions between atmosphere and ecosystems from local to global scales

He is particularly interested in soils, the interactions between carbon and water cycles and the impacts of extreme events on ecosystems and society. Methodologically, he combines system modeling with artificial intelligence/machine learning to extract knowledge from heterogeneous data sets (remote sensing, in-situ, modeling).

Markus’ research visit mainly is aimed at collaborating on the interpretation of experimental and observational data sets with machine learning and hybrid modelling techniques, e.g. in terms of drought and temperature effects on carbon cycling. Experimental data from alpine and lowland manipulation experiments of the Institute of Ecology and FLUXNET eddy coviarance data of which e.g. the Neustift site is part of will be exploited. The visit also provides an opportunity to develop novel perspectives for future collaborative research aimed at advancing understanding of the impacts of climate change in ecosystems from local to global scale.

He was coordinator and PI in numerous international projects, lead author of the IPCC special report on Climate Extremes (SREX) and is member in numerous boards and Scientific Advisory Committees. Markus Reichstein was awarded with one of the first ERC grants (2008), the Jim-Gray-Seed award for e-science (2010), the Max-Planck Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation (2013), the Piers J. Sellers Mid-Career Award by the American Geophysical Union (2018), an ERC Synergy Grant (2019) and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Preis 2020.

He will be contributing to the Doctoral Program ‚Alpine Biology and Global Change‘ and looks forward to meeting and interacting with staff and students in Innsbruck, hopefully not only via Zoom.....
