New approaches to regulate wireworms, with a special emphasis on organic farming (BBK-Project)

Yield losses and crop damage due to click beetle larvae (Coleoptera: Elateridae), also known as wireworms, increased recently in organic and conventional agriculture. This project aims at providing basic information on the diversity and distribution of pest wireworms in Austria and to evaluate new approaches of wireworm risk assessment and regulation. Altogether five work packages are included: (1) identification of wireworm species diversity and distribution in organic and conventional potato-, maize-, and vegetable fields, (2) determination of the most important environmental factors driving distribution and population densities of wireworms, (3) development of a new molecular method to identify all Central-European Agriotes species in their larval stage, (4) evaluation of a new, inexpensive, and easy-to-perform approach to predict damages due to wireworms and (5) evaluation of a new a catch crop approach to directly regulate wireworms in the field.
