The influence of the entomopathogenous fungus Beauveria brongniartii on carabid beetles representing non-target-organisms

The entomopathogenous fungus Beauveria brongniartii is currently used to control larvae of cockchafers (Melolontha melolontha) which are known as severe pests in grassland and arable crops. The fungus is thought to be highly host specific, but little is known on its influence on other soil-dwelling arthropods such as predatory beetle larvae. Knowledge on non-target effects of B. brongniartii, however, is of great importance for using the fungus’s as an sustainable biocontrol agent.

In this study the influence of B. brongniartii on three wide-spread predatory carabid beetle species is assessed. The soil-living stages are exposed to the fungus in different ways and formulations to evaluate if B. brongniartii negatively affects the development and survival of these non-target species.
