PhD project

Refugee resettlement in the European Union: Lessons to be learned from a comparative analysis with the United States

The research goal of my doctoral project is to identify concrete recommendations in order to develop a uniform, sustainable EU resettlement framework through a comparative approach with the United States' experience.

My research is also directed towards the specification of the conceptual definition of refugee resettlement (including the identification of current sources of misuse and discrimination); on this basis, my research will try to suggest international legal protection standards that a uniform, sustainable EU resettlement framework shall comply with. In this regard, I would like to provide answers to the following (main) questions:

  • What is the concept of refugee resettlement and (how) has it changed?
  • Where are sources of friction between refugee resettlement and international protection standards and how can they be eliminated?
  • What lessons can be learned from the US' refugee resettlement experience?
