The Department of Molecular Biology together with the Digital Science Center of the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck, Austria, seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the field of Bioinformatics/Genomics. You can find the legally binding German version of the job description on the university's career portal.


  • Independent research activity in digital pattern recognition of dynamic, multidimensional biological processes preferentially to assess disease-related trajectories. Development and validation of novel machine learning strategies are an asset
  • Independent, research-led teaching in the extent of 4, after reaching the qualification agreement 8 semester hours per week in Genomics, Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology and in the area of the Digital Science Center (DiSC)
  • Habilitation (or, in justified exceptional cases, other defined qualification aims) in molecular biology with a focus on genomics and bioinformatics
  • Acquisition of third-party funds for the financing of independent research projects is expected
  • Supervision of students, of academic qualification work and participation in ongoing examinations
  • Participation in the research facilities of the University (especially CMBI and DiSC) and in the organisation of conferences and administrative tasks 

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biomedicine or a related field
  • Post-doc or relevant professional experience beyond Ph.D 
  • Deep knowledge and independent research experience in the fields of bioinformatics and ‘omics’ technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, metabolomics, or epigenomics) with an interdisciplinary approach
  • Experience in acquiring of third-party funds
  • Relevant publications in international peer-reviewed journals and talks at international conferences or workshops
  • International work experience and cooperation is desired
  • Outstanding team and communication skills
  • Knowledge of German language (at least B2 level or willingness to acquire this in a reasonable time)

Tenure-track model

The vacant post offers a continuous scientific career up to an associate professor. A key component of this tenure track model is the so called “Qualifizierungsvereinbarung” (qualification agreement). This agreement shall be concluded one year after being employed at the latest.

An initial salary of EUR 3.890 p.m. shall be offered for this position. In the following, the conclusion of the qualification agreement will entitle to an increased salary of EUR 4.599,60 p.m. and the fulfilment of the agreed qualification objectives will entitle to an increased salary of EUR 4.987,20 p.m. All mentioned salaries are monthly gross salaries, paid 14 times p.a.
